The Qantas group pilot academy is one of the best ways to get into aviation (Fly for airlines), the program however has over 22 000 applicants each year which makes it very competitive.
Could someone please recommend ways of being selected into the program, I have heard that you need a decent amount of flying hours before applying while others have said its best to join the Air Force for a gap year and then apply into the program.

Easiest way is just to study B. Aviation (flying) at unsw or other unis. You get your license at shorter hours then regular flyers cause your being taught at a university. Also, UNSW has direct links and programs to Qantas link enabling graduates of the program to applying and being accepted, easier and more likely then non-university graduates. Also keep in mind, if you plan to fly with other airlines in other countries, a university degree is more desirable.

Air force is also great way too, but again, that in itself is a competitive and tedious process too.
