for the hsc exams, is our atar measured from how well we did our (hsc)exams compared to the cohort or is it what we got as a mark from the hsc exams?

lol what, technically both. Your moderated hsc mark will depend upon how you went relative to your cohort in your subs (your rank) externally (in the hsc exam) which will be influenced by your internal rank.
