1. sketch y = (x + 5)^1/2 for -4 <= x <= 4 and find its maximum and minimum values.

just having trouble sketching it... what are the steps? thanks

1. translate y=x^1/2 by 5 units to the left.

2. since it's an increasing function, your minimum is the left-most point, and the maximum the right-most point.

hi im not sure how to draw sketch y=x^1/2 in the first place :(

y=x^1/2
y^2=x

...Which is the inverse graph of y=x^2, so in other words just draw y=x^2, but on its side, concave in the direction of the x-axis, with turning pt. at (0,0).

As no value of x will produce a negative value for y, simply omit anything below the x-axis and that is your graph of y=x^1/2 :)
