Questions about combined degrees with Bcomm and similar degrees (1 Viewer)

Im in year 12 this year, doing the HSC verrry soon.

Commerce/Economics Combined
I want to do Commerce @ UNSW but my careers adviser thought it was extremely funny that I was doing it alone... at the beginning of 2008 I wanted to do combined commerce and eco but I thought I couldn't handle it - and still wondering XD" I've got no brains for law, not interested in science or engineering...and I wanna get out of uni quick~ My careers adviser said it was pointless doing the combined degree but I have friends doing the combined degree and said it was really helpful...

Transfer
Also if I don't get the UAI for Commerce, should I do Economics first and transfer at the end of year? Is it possible to transfer at the end of 1st sem? Or should I just do Commerce at a uni with a lower UAI...so I don't have to waste time 0.0"

Majors
If I end up doing Comm, is there any benefit or need to do business law? I'm ranked first in my school for Legal Studies, although I dont have the brains for B Law, I was looking at business law as a major with accounting or finance?

B Commerce (Liberal studies)
I'd like to take up a language as well, but people said it's a waste of time doing a language at Uni......is it going to add to my study load?

I'd greatly appreciate any assistance from you guys - your opinins are highly valuable to me as you've all experienced/experiencing this! Thank you!

Did they give you a reason as to why doing a language at uni is a waste of time? Because like... I don't see the logic in it being a waste of time.


Transferring from BEc to BCom is quite common, as the first year core subjects are identical and thus you won't 'waste' time doing any subjects that don't count towards your degree.

Hey, I'll give you my thoughts on the degree...

Com/Eco

To put it simply, com/eco is basically a commerce degree with an extra economics major. As to whether you should do it or not is simply up to what you want to do after you finish university. Most comm people do accounting/finance majors simply because doing an accounting major enables you to work in the various accounting roles available when you graduate and in particular, as acct/fins are the basic prerequisites for CA/CPA. In my opinion, I think its a great combined degree. Commerce and Economics have the same first year courses and by doing both degrees, you get a greater number of majors to choose from. Economics however is quite a fixed degree as there are only 4 or so majors you can choose from. Put simply, its a matter of personal prefence as to whether com/eco would appeal to you? Are you willing to spend that extra year at uni to get a eco major or not. Also, you can always combine commerce or economics with arts or social science as well as they allow you an even greater selection of majors (the downside being you're at uni for 5 years as opposed to the 4 years for com/eco.)

Transfer

Yes, do economics first at unsw if you dont get into commerce first year. Thats what I did as I was in the same situation last year. As I mentioned before, you do the exact same first year courses in eco as you would in com (another thing too is these first year courses are 4 eco courses and 2 acct courses) so you wouldnt have to redo anything if you transfered later on. If you don't get the UAI for commerce or eco at unsw, you could go to another uni with a lower uai and try and transfer from there or you can do something like arts/social science at unsw and transfer after first year.

Majors

If you want to do business law as a major, go for it! I dont do it myself but from what i hear, its somewhat dry in content as I guess most legal courses would be. Apparently, it also satisfies CA/CPA requirements like finance but I'm not too sure there. As for your other majors, do whatever the hell you want. Like I said before, most people do acct/fins but there are a lot of others who do different combinations of acct or fins or something completely different. In commerce, you have a lot of options so do whatever interests you. As for economics, you're limited in choice as its a specialised degree so you can only do economics/econometrics/financial eco and eco history. Check out the UNSW handbook online if you havent already to read up on whats available.

I forgot to mention before but if you do pursue com/eco, you do commerce majors and one eco major. If you only do eco, you can still do a commerce major but you must do one of the 4 eco majors mentioned above as your other one.

B Commerce (Liberal studies)

Once again, if you want to do a language, go for it! At the end of the day, its your degree so you can do whatever you want. Com (lib studies) is basically like a normal com degree except you get an arts/social science major as well when you graduate, all under one degree. If you think that just doin commerce is a bit much for you and you want to do something else (like a language), this is a good option. You could also think of com/arts as well if you're willing to spend 5 years to get 2 degrees when you graduate instead of one.

Com/Sci is actually only 4 years whereas com/law, com/arts, and com/social science are 5 years. In terms of advantages, it depends on what combination you want to do and so on.

The main advantage is you get 2 degrees when you graduate. Another advantage is the wider range of majors you can study overall. Any other advantages are whatever you perceive as reasons for doing the combined degree itself. It's up to your own opinion really as to whether or not its worth it?

my economics teacher did a combined degree in business commerce, majoring in economics with a legal degree. he his commerce degree full time for 3 years and is completing his legal one part time. he said hes worked in banks etc and most major companies want economist, especially with law and business degrees. i think i am the noly one in my economics class that hasn't applied for and economics degree

BCom/BEc is not going to be double the load, the reason its 4 years and not 5 is because they have the same core courses

as fantasy27 has mentioned it does not double the load. this is the reason for your extra duration of one year. it provides you with 2 degrees at the end. and the load for everyone unless you have chosen to do otherwise will be the same for everyone. ie. 4 courses a semester (you can choose to underload and overload after your first semester of uni upon approval from the faculty and student central).

im doing an economics (liberal studies) degree, which keeping in mind is pretty much the same thing as a commerce(liberal) degree besides the fact that i have to major in economics. however, it is not compulsory to do a language in liberal studies. you get to choose 6 arts and science courses in any combination out of 6. you get to do some core units for liberal studies as well, these of which are listed in the online handbook or can be found on the faculty website. This is my personal view. I'd rather honestly have an economics degree than a language qualification at university. If you want to study a language, its good, but you could learn a language elsewhere (through a seperate UNSW or external language course) instead. Com/Eco won't double your load, you'll just be spendin that extra year at uni finishing your required courses (as at uni, most people would do the 6 core courses first and then afterwards, do whatever they feel like from then on). However, the courses you do in these degrees like any other degree, build up on each other, so there's always a bit of inflexibility in what you want to do. Another thing is that not every course is available every semester too.

My biased-as-hell choice is to do BCom/Eco and do your language on the side.

I didn't know you could do languages as an elective Because I looked at UNSW website and it said electives offered from Australian School of Business, which I presume is not ...languages?

If you can do a language as an eletive then BCom/Ec with language as an elective sounds good!
