-Is the major work the only assignment you have for the whole year?
-Does it have to be 30-40 pages?

1. Technically, no. You have in school assessments like a proposal, a talk with your teachers about the work and a draft copy - but really... it's all about that major work you send away.
2. There are word limits. For a short story it is 6000-8000 words.

No... your external 'exam' is that major work you send in.

Hmm, sounds interesting. Just how creative does your major work have to be? And what could you do to make it creative?

Also, if you hate analyzing texts and techniques and stuff like that, so if you do badly in English Extension 1, does that mean you will do badly in English Extension 2 as well or are they 2 completely different things?

There are various mediums you can work with, not just a short story although they tend to be the most popular e.g. a critical study, a short film, poetry, speeches etc.

The EEX2 course is completely separate from the EEX1 and advanced course in terms of what you have to do, but i've heard that your major work has to be linked/inspired by one of your other english courses somehow?

As silentdreamer said, it does not necessarily have to be a short story.
Essays/studies are also an option if you are not particular creative.

Even then, it doesn't have to be a completely original idea.
One student last year submitted this:
which is an appropriation of Macbeth and recieved a 47/50 so *shrug*
It just depends on what you do.

I have already picked Standard English. Do you think they will let me change if I desperately want to? English Extension 2 sounds great, and I don't like English but I love doing whatever you want and making it creative and all that stuff:(

I feel like I just missed out now.

It's sounds so much better than all the boring stuff we do in English now.

Go sign up for Advanced and Extension 1 and wait until HSC to do it.

Some people endure EX1 just to do EX2.

And genuinely bullcrapping how Adv. English or EX1 "inspired" your major work is easy. I didn't do it because EX1 work was the basis for mine.

So I don't have to like listen in class at all or put any effort into English Extension 1 to be able to do a good major work for English Ext 2?

1. EX1 ideas inspired my major work.
2. Uhh... no. But you're wasting your time in EX1 if you do so. You might not find the spark for your major work there.

Are you allowed to make a video? Can it be animated? And does the video have to be something from English - like Shakespeare or anything?

Yes, a video is allowed, and it can be animated. It can be on pretty much any contextual concern (this word you learn to despise because of how much it's mentioned in all of the courses)that you're moved by, but as long as you link your video back to the research that you've done over the Extension 2 period and how you invoke meaning in your text through aspects of your video.

What do you mean when you say "It has to be inspired from EXt 1 ideas?" What are EX1 ideas?

Extension 1 English topics.

And mine was inspired from English Ext. 1, yours can be from there or from Advanced English. But you have to show how one English course in the HSC helped shape your work.

That sounds pretty complicated. How would you do that? What EX1 topic was yours inspired by?

I did a topic called Textual Dynamics which was like Postmodernism. So you saw in my Extension 2 work themes from the prescribed texts of Extension 1 - like, stopping the story to go talk to the reader directly, or having an interesting ending and having an interesting textual form.

Are those ideas from EX1 hard to include in your major work or easy? What are other ideas are there?

So should I pick up Adv and Ext 1? I really want to drop Society and Culture. I was thinking of dropping it for Modern but then I figured I didn't want that either, so should I drop that for those extra 2 units of English? EX2 sounds really fun, but before I make any drastic decisions I really need to be sure of what I'm doing. The issues are that I will be have to be doing 12 units in Year 12, instead of 10, and since EX2 is only 1 unit, I'll be risking damage to my ATAR, because I'm not particularly good at English.

So you are 100% sure that you don't need anything of EX1 to do a good major work?
