Who exactly were the Alkmenoids and the Philiads?
i was reading a text book which spoke about Spartan polis development. It said in 800 BC the Gerousia was formed due to Lycurgus and then in 650 BC austerity was introduced due to Lycurgus. Cnofused that he was around for 200 years, I looked at my other notes for Sparta which placed Lycurgus at 650 BC. Now I'm really confused because this mucks up the timeline. Any ideas?
Also, whats the most accepted spelling of perioeci?

As for spelling of perioeci - I'd just look in Bradley :D

As for Lycurgus: He is an amazing character, isn't he? Remember though that he could be a fictional character. It's a lot easier to pass off new laws as a "recently discovered law set by Lycurgus" rather than as an oligarchic decision.

Propganda to the max...

lol. Thanks. I realise the controversy surrounding Lycurgus. I was just looking at a timeline and it was all mixed up. But i got over it, cos in History u can say anything and just add "it is supposed..." or "according to modern historians...". lol ;)
