Outline the steps to convert 2-methylbutane to 2-methyl-2-butanol and name a test to confirm that the product is an alkanol.

Using the equation for the reaction of 2-chloro-2-methylpentane with a strong base, will colour change will be observed when the product is mixed with acidified potassium permanganate?
(not sure what it refers to with 'a strong base')

Name the processes in the diagram (i know 1 is fermentation)

3 is ethene because it undergoes addition polymerisation to form polyethylene, hence process 2 must be dehydration (alcohol + strong acid --> alkene). 4 is halogenation (Br2 is reacted) and 5 is ethane as it is a hydrogenation reaction.

2-chloro-2-methylpentane should form 2-methylpentan-2-ol in the presence of a strong base (NaOH is the most common base used for this reaction), although tertiary haloalkanes generally undergo elimination reactions instead of substitution. If a tertiary alcohol is the product of this reaction, no colour change will be observed if KMnO4 is added because it will not oxidise tertiary alcohols.

The only way to get better at these questions is to familiarise yourself with the types of reactions in the syllabus. Fortunately, these reactions are easy to summarise with flow charts, so that may be helpful.
