On my first day doing complex numbers in school, there was a massive argument LOL

then....the teacher goes: "What is the imaginary part of z?"

OR

Which is correcto Mr Complexo? Have of my class thinks its y, the other half thinks it iy

I think it's "y" alone. Is that right?

Edit: Above post answers my question!

Guys, then what do I do? I got homework due on Tuesday

Teacher gave me a couple of z=x+iy equations and i must find the Re(z) and Im(z) and conjugate of z, should i just conform to his teachings or do it my way, ie. z=3+2i, Im(z)=2

Yeh, and my teacher is not female, my teacher is a male

but when he collects the homework, should i just go Im(z)=iy or Im(z)=y --> generalisation, or should i just argue or just leave it

Tell him he's wrong. You're in year 12, this isn't primary school. You're allowed to argue back to a teacher. This isn't even subjective, he's just wrong.

This.

If something you feel isn't right then tell your teacher. Maybe present him some sources to confirm it.

Ok i'll tell him hes wrong and i'll prove it by using a complex plane

It is called the 'imaginary component' for a reason. Because it is assumed to have 'i' in front hence the name.

If you were asked to give the imaginary TERMS, then you could say it with the 'i' included (though still I am sitting on the fence on that one).
