Hey Guys, What happens if the person coming first does pretty bad in the hsc...and the person coming second smashes him/her does the person coming first still take the highest mark?

yep, but then they will take the shit mark they achieved in the hsc exam.
the rank second will take his achieved hsc mark, and the the second highest hsc mark( which probably isnt that of the first guy, since he did so bad)....
so all in all, the guy ranked second will be #winning.

The moderated assessment mark of the student ranked 1 will be the highest exam mark of the cohort. But their exam mark will be whatever they achieved, so if it's 70, then they keep the 70 exam mark.

Nope. If your moderated assessment mark, is say, 95, whilst the other persons is 92, and you get like 90 in the HSC and the other person gets 97, they will take the highest overall HSC mark.- this is what I've been told ? Apologies if it's incorrect

Wait so..

I'm currently second in a subject but i am going to come first in it (only second by like 1% from assignments)

If i score say 90% and the person coming first only gets say 80%, what happens to my mark?
Do i get the 90?

Yeah, definitely.

I'm assuming that's 90 HSC exam mark. So you're only 1% off from first, so given your cohort doesn't have a terrible tail, then you should receive a moderated assessment mark close to the highest exam mark. If 90 is the highest exam mark, then you would receive something around 89 or 90. That gets averaged with your 90 exam mark to get a final HSC mark of around 90.

Is second really affected that much by the tail...even with a small gap with first :O ???

No, not really, but it 'could' be the difference between 89 or 90. Wouldn't it be more pleasing to see 90, 90, 90, 90, 90 than 89, 89, 89, 89, 89?

yeah, there have been times where the 2nd school ranked person came out better than the 1st ranked in the externals - it's not always 'first come first serve'
