i would have to say if it is my friends coming first of course there would be slight want to beat them. but thing is i put my all into this and if i dont i still know it is my best.
although i do get quite annoyed when the arrogent ones beat me.
i do engineering for example im around 15/18 i am more then happy with that as i know they guys in the class are alot smarter. the guy coming first always free to lend a hand with it, guy coming second different, he wont give away anything. i dont see why. it is to much about competition for him

then theres the one who is coming just before me, i have a right t be annoyed with him, the one tht doesnt listen in class and tries to destract me, only to get his brother to do the assessment tasks for him. cant wait to see how he goes in the half yrly on friday =]

thats my whigne

haha last year my friend and I were in the top two places in basically every subject with me being first in most of them but this yaer the tables have turned and now she is currently beating me but its healthy competition, we make each other work harder and we also help each other out oo like sharing notes and discussing the assessments it makes it fun

If you are jealous of/hate people who are ranked higher than you, that just says something about yourself, which isn't all too flattering by the way.
well said. The HSC can really get people to come out in a negative way. I mean personally I found that some friends were not real friends after all...

It really bug me again when people don't talk to you throughout the year, but when it comes to assessment or test day, they are like 'oh you're my best friends' anyone like that?

the ranking system is a big problem with the hsc because rather than people helping eachother out so that those that are struggling can get some extra help, many people just dont want to give other people a few extra marks and so they keep their work guarded.

competition is great but hsc takes it a bit too far IMO

60000 do HSC and more than 100 do exceptionally well.

The definition of "exceptionally well" depends on individuals and it can apply to anyone who did better than what they are potentially able to do or what they initially hoped for.

never thought about it like that and you really shouldnt either. at my school i didnt really hear of people doing incredibly badly. the guys that were only so-so with thier studied ended up getting a UAI in the 80s.

the people that are getting below 50 are really not trying at all in the hsc. not handing in assignments, doing a 3 hour test for 30 minutes then sleeping for the rest of the exam, etc. even a basic level of effort consisting of listening in class and doing all assignments will get you a decent UAI.

so dont worry about failing horribly, if you work at all, it wont happen

With the subjects I'm doing (Humanities Legal/eco and business) I didnt expect to have THAT much competition. Mind you this is only the beginning and its already a dog eat dog field at my school.
With teachers stressing that rankings matters SO much that everyone nearly has turned aganist one another.

Personally speaking, I'm selfish and I want all the marks as possible. Mind you, I work my ass off. If its my friends that needs help I'll glady do so, but if its someone I dont like, I doubt ill help.

I will do anything to get ranked first, including lying to and cheating friends and enemies alike.

At the end of the day: rank > friends

People in my school these days, its just all about ranking, but strangely not me... anyone out there would want there friend to be 1st and that you wouldn't mind coming like 2nd or you would just hate the person who is coming first???
Asians say NO.
