i know there have been a fair few threads very similar but i still wanted to clarify some things

say your internal rank for every subject was around the middle of your cohort, in an average achool
you go into your hsc and end up with very good raw marks for each subject (up with the say 1st and 2nd ranked people in your cohort): does the HSC final exam significantly effect what your final ATAR can be in terms of providing a means to improve it, because whenever i see an explanation for some reason i take away that if you are ranked average in your school, then you cant improve your final ATAR using the HSC final exams because the moderation process will take place using your internal ranks, and thus you will not be able to significantly improve your atar

However, a friend told me that the HSC finals are very important, because your ATAR is a combination of a moderated assessment mark (the nth ranked hsc final exam mark in your cohort moderates your nth ranked assessment mark) and YOUR FINAL EXAM MARK (NO ONE ELSES), and thus this means that you could potentially improve your final ATAR dramatically because of YOUR FINAL EXAM MARK

so is the above ^ true to any extent? do the HSC final exams provide a means by which you can significantly improve (within reason obvuously) your ATAR due to very high scoring exam results, or is your ATAR very much limited and drawn back by your final internal ranking

Your HSC mark is divided into 2, your actual exam mark you sat on that day, and your school assessment mark. They average the two scores, your Final HSC mark. This HSC mark contributes to you atar, meaning your rank and exam mark both count.
For example, if the atar was only limited based on your final internal rank, and you go to an average school, where the average score is bad, then there is no incentive to do well for the HSC exam. Your atar is based on the whole year, where if you're top ranked, you will benefit from this as you keep the top moderated assessment marks, hence in reality, every task at school and BOSTES exam counts..
Your friend is true, for example you are rank middle where the assessment mark is roughly 79, if u get 97 for the HSC exam, average 79 and 97 and you get a final HSC mark of 88. This 88 will contribute to your atar. However, u don't do well and you get 85 for the HSC exam, you get a final mark of 82.
In the end, consistency is the key.
