Assuming if OP tops all his subjects at school and gets 2 or 3 state ranks, then would you say he'll get 99.95?

Strong chance - I'd say at least a 93 in everything else.

Most 99.95'ers have got state rank/s.

so basically there's kinda no chance? Or very little?
Its hard to say, there are always a few people who get 99.95 from schools ranked outside the top 40 or 50. It really will depend on just how good you are - but its certainly not impossible.

Even if you dont make 99.95, you are still on track for a great ATAR which can get you into so many courses. Good luck with your goal though, hope you can make it.

I'd go so far as to say the minority of 99.95'ers have state ranks. A large proportion of state ranks in subjects taken by 99.95'ers are occupied by those who put too much effort into that one subject at the cost of others, resulting in a lower ATAR. A lot (most) of the .95ers just did 'really well' (sub-state rank level though) in all subjects.

Unless they manage to state rank in half of their subjects anyway (Jega and Stacey Law)...

IB is irrelevant considering almost no schools actually do IB.
It is relevant since the cohort might not be as strong since the top students may choose to do IB...
Also I was only trying to give a reason to why our rankings are low.

I didn't think I could the top at ext maths since it isn't my forte.
Well topping it wouldn't have been such a priority since it scales better than all your other subjects.

Without it, it becomes harder to get a 99.95.

She said that she isnt good at it so I'd say the scaling benefits would be nullified in this situation.

She said she couldn't top it - not that she wasn't good at it. She also said that she was topping 2u maths, which obviously indicates that she's at least somewhat mathematically competent.

She wouldn't have to top it in order for it to count/outscale something like Biology, or Economics, since a mark of 88 or so WILL count over a 93-ish in Biology.

A school of rank 51 is probably expected to be top 5 in IB, anyway. There's only very few schools that do IB.

Fair point. I reckon that for 99.95, she would need at least 93 in MX1 compared to around 96-97 in all her other subjects. So if she was capable of 93 or greater in MX1 then I would say she made a mistake in not picking it.
