If you want an atar comfortably above 99 then being first in all your subjects can definitely give you just that. However if you just want to pass the 99+ mark then i suggest being within the top 10 (maybe 5) for a school ranked 100th and being in the top 20 for school ranked 7th will be sufficient enough.

top 100 school might get 2-5 99ers a year. You'd easily want to be in top 3 for everything, or top 1/2 for most and then a shitty English rank or whatever (like 12th)

Well I saw this persons rank and people were saying will be likely to get 95+ possibly even 96-97, and most of the ranks are barely in top 40 :S even though the school is ranked 5, surely enough 2 schools ranks cant go from top 20 for a 99 atar to top 50?

School rank: top 5
English Adv: 60/160
Maths 2U: 85/160
Maths Ext: 57/160
Economics: 13/55
Physics: 38/53

For one thing, the person who was doing those subjects are illegible for hsc unless he does 10 units at least. Am i not correct?...
Also, perhaps the subjects are different which can vary the atar due to the aligning and scaling.

This. For a school ranked 7th, my guess would be top 25 - 35% maybe.

Somewhere in the top 4 or 3 for all subjects except for music. For music, im assuming only few people doing it so im guessing you should be ranked 1st or 2nd for it. This should be enough for 99+

Well, the only reason atar estimates require school rank is solely for estimating the strength of your cohort. You could be at a school ranked 500 and it is certainly possible (although unlikely) that 5 students at that school can get 99+. However, the competition and expectations of better ranked schools can also 'force' you to get a better atar. Other than that, theres not much differencein terms of hsc between a 500th ranked school and a 10th ranked school.

Remember that any ranks of schools that you see are based on previous years' cohorts which may or not give an indication about how your cohort at that school will go - your cohort may be a lot stronger or weaker than the one ahead of you. Each year, after the marks are done new ranks for schools are issued.

So essentially, a school ranked higher is 'better'?
Not neccesarily, but a school ranked higher got more band 6s average per student in that particular year so it's an alright indicator. You can get 90+ atar with low band 5s in a lot of subjects so its a flawed way of looking at it though.
