if rankings in the end are really close, does it make a difference at all as opposed to when, for eg. 1st is ahead by a big margin

As far as I have been told, the mark difference matters a tiny bit. The scaling system sounds quite evil, and i don't really like to think about it ^.^;

so if you are ranked 1st in a subject, do u receive the highest hsc mark in the that subject even if u dont do that well in the exam?

its pretty complex

basically

they group all yoru schools internal assessment marks For a subject(lets call that G)
then they get your internal assessment mark for that subject (lets call it X)

and they put X/G
which will give u a percentage of your internal assessment over the total group for that subject (lets call that P)

so X/G = P

now,
oncce the subject is done externally
they get all the external marks from your cohort and add them together (lets call that A)
then they get your internal percentage (P) and they put

P multiplied by A

as your internal moderated assessment mark

so the percentage of your itnernal mark of the total internal marks multiplied by the total external marks gives u your moderated internal mark

then they get that, add it to your actual external exam mark, divide it by 2

and bobs your uncle

your aligned hsc mark

whcih then gets sent to uai centre where it gets eviscerated
