So, are we debating whether they are artists or not?

It depends. Some rappers are incredibly talented in what they write

(I would now like to clarify that I don't like rap, especially mainstream rap)

Can't really say much about this topic but mehhh, it's their career, and if they choose to express themselves explicitly that way through music, I guess they have that right...

I don't know any rappers, punk bands, rock bands, pop groups who have written anything or said anything very intelligent...

They are sure incredibly talented writers, performers but that doesn't make them right.

No, it doesn't make them right, but its their form of expressing themselves, (at least I'm sure they'd argue in their last line of defence).

Although I'd like to question some of their content

50 cent, if you are reading this, QUIT IT WITH THE VIOLENCE ON WOMEN IN YOUR LYRICS YOU PATRIARCHAL FUCKWIT

Patriarchy != Bad
Patriarchy != Violence Against Women
Patriarchy = You getting into the kitchen and making me some pie.
Irony = Women who still buy his CDs.

^^ its funny watching people go aorund saying 'dawg' etc lol i was at this party last night and all these islanders were saying 'yeh nigga hit dat shiet dawg' funny shit lol

im not a big fan of maintsream rap...but the actual real hip hop artists have alot of clever lyrcis which are mostly social commentarys...who are us to say they do or dont know about politics when WE DONT KNOW THEM...most of their 'dumb' songs are ones u hear on radio because those 'dumb' songs make them the money...those are also what create the stereotypes 'rappers are unintelligent all rapping about guns and hos and shit'

their are alot of rappers out their capable of making 'clever' social commentary and whether they know about politics or not? i do not know....50 cent is crap g-unit sucks most of that mainstream bullshit is only good for the beats...

and if you think 'all' rappers go around saying that shit and not actual producing really good verses that are smart then you are ignorant

This is bad. Radio artists shouldn't be allowed to have political themes in their messages, it'll make people question the integrity of the politicians they're advocating.

what about peter garrett

he's a member of parliament now and he used to be in a rock band

so who should be allowed to make political comments, only people with a degree in politics or other social sciences?

I just think certain individuals (read: rap artists) do more damage when they try and get in on the "cause". It's just another thing that Bush's supporters can use against all those who don't support him, which is really the last thing they need. If you were a politician, wouldn't you rather your supporters had a relatively clean record and good public image?
