ok these are just estimates of raw marks for 2004 HSC adn i was wondering compared to how hard the tests were how theyd be aligned so i can get an idea of my uai from sam

english(advanced) 75-85 (dunno how they mark them)
maths 2unit 70/120
maths 3 unit 30/84
physics 78/100
chem 85/100
economics 89/100
1unit studies of religion 33/50

What they should have said was that your moderated assessment mark is set equal to (for example) the fifth examination mark.

Your exam mark will always be your exam mark. This doesn't depend on anything else.

Wait.....so our exam marks arent scailed at all?. We just get whatever we get on the day as our exam mark

No, that's not correct.

Your Raw marks -> Process -> Aligned Marks (these are the marks that you get told)
Your Raw Marks -> Process -> Scaled Marks (these are the marks you don't need to care about, but are used along with aligned marks to calculate your UAI, I believe).

In summary: you will normally never be told your raw marks, rather your aligned marks.

45-52/84 = an E4 in 2001!! wow... I did the 2001 paper and to be honest it didn't seem hard. I understand that since it was the first year of the new HSC things may have been lenient but still... That seems awfully low...

ok sayy that theres three people in the physics class that get good marks like in the high 70's and 80's

my teachers say things like we have 2 work together so we all get good marks so that the top people arent pulled down.

will i be pulled down by these people.

i worked out that the lowest possible mark i can get for physics is 76% raw.
thats eliminating all the questions that tricked me a bit.
i know i used the right formula for some of them so that will give me more marks. but i think i got about 85%
where will that scale me?.
i need a band 6 to do advanced physics in uni

do u think i will make it into the 90's? scaled?

"The mark that you get for a test is your raw mark and then this gets aligned to get your aligned mark according to your subjects and this is reported on the documents that you receive from the Board of Studies. The raw marks are also used by UAC to calculate your UAI by scaling these raw marks. So aligned marks are not used in your UAI"

Ahh that comment is kinda freaking me out!! so if i get 70s raw for MathsX2...it gets scaled (like on SAM and for my UAI) as a 70?
or the aligned...like 90ish or whatever:S

UAC works with your rank compared to the other candidates-if the exam was like the hardest ever or something and that 70 was in the top 28% of candidates then it will scale well i.e it's ur rank and this is detremined from ur raw marks-not the school assessment bit also counts not just ur hsc.

people ranked first and last get the first and last highest marks achieved by their year as their school component-it's the people in between that get affected by moderating-so if ur ranked 1 and u rip up the exam and get 1st in state for that then u'll top the state for that subject.

for maths ext2 i thought i got around 77-78/120 and i got 89 exam mark and for ext1 i thought i was around 68/84 and i got 93 exam mark

No. UAI is calculated by RAW marks.

so how do they work out how hard the paper was for a subject like english where you have different modules? like for extension we're doing the module "gendered language" and its supposed to be hard and hardly anyone does it ( literally like 50-60 ppl) but then shit loads of people do crime fiction, so if all the crime fic people do well but us gendered language people do bad, then we won't be affected by scaling cos they dont scale within the course it self.
gosh this is incredibly confusing but you get what im saying right? like how do they scale for a subject if a particular module within the course is more difficult than another, supposedly.

Taking these raw band cut-offs, can you look at the BOS scaled means list and get a rough idea of how your subject is scaled in terms of raw marks, in terms of its position on the list and these available statistics?

Or is that just stupid?

This table consists of all raw band cut-offs that can be derived from the available raw marks. Raw marks, including raw band cut-offs, cannot be compared between courses. Comparisons across years can yield an indication of the relative difficulties of examination papers.

I don't think anyone has done it for ages. They were refusing to do it and I think that's what that blue form that we sign, saying "BOS has the right to retain or destroy students HSC marks." Apparently that wouldn't hold up against FOI act though, as you can force someone to sign away their rights for freedom of information like that, particularly when half the people are under 18.

However, it is still a pain in the arse, and you will want legal advice.

You can always ask.

My understanding is that students are being given 'stock' answers denying their requests.
