Yes you can. But you must do Honours in Science, and satisfy the Adv Science requirement by taking at least 12 uoc of advanced subjects per year for science subjects.

u can do bSc(adv) with comm?? i asked them and they only let me do bSc(not adv) with comm ><

i cant imagine being stuck in a lab for 3 longs hrs...and i heard they r strict about not letting u eat in labs as well =(

Just wait till you get to third year for 4 hr labs.

I'm so confused about Biotechnology(3052) and the bioth in adv.science~
both r 4 years with honour....so what's the difference?
does 3052 provide different levels of honour classes?

In 3052, you need to do two subjects during your Honours year (plus a research component), whereas in Adv science (Biotech) Honours you only do research, plus the optional to choose to do a subject or an essay.

Both lead to a science degree specialised in biotechnology. There is no difference in the classes of Honours being awarded.

In really basic terms:
Bachelor of Medicine = being a doctor. (involves 5-6 years of study, is harder to get into)
B Med Sci = not being a doctor. (involves 3 years of study, 4 with honours). B Med Sci is just a specialised science degree.

Don't worry, med sci isn't a complete waste of time, I just got an internship in the area of pharmacovigilance... My advice though is get your name out their as early as you can, don't leave it till after your degree to be trying to make contact with employers and institutes. NO ONE wants you without any experience; I was lucky to get this internship through a family friend.

Also, all your professors who say there is no money / jobs in science are full of crap, don't listen to them.

I have a few questions regarding the bachelor of science/ commerce

1. For b.science do students do general courses in first year i.e. chem, phys and maths then go on to choose their major? Or can students choose their major in the early part of first year?

2. Are courses in b.sci (such as physics, stats, maths, chem) highly objective? That is assessment tasks are not subjected to marker bias like in many humanities and english subjects?

1. Yes that is generally how it works, in first year you will do a variety of generic science subjects such as chemistry, biology, maths and physics. Then in 2nd year you will do subjects more in your area of focus; and finally in 3rd year you will even more discretely specialize.
If you look under the heading "Majors availible in advance science" at UNSW Handbook Program - Advanced Science - 3972
It contains a heap of links with 1st - 3rd year courses to take for a selected major.


2. Physics, maths, stats and Chem are I would say 90% objective; there is very little subjective topic matter unlike especially HSC chemistry. Stats (from the course I did) has a bit of subjectivness as you are asked to interpret / comment on data and draw reasonable conclusions.

I'm thinking of going for the combined commerce/science degree. I was wondering how would the science degree benefit my knowledge in commerce related fields?
