I read Sparknotes' 'Othello' over the holidays, however we are also reading and analyzing it in class.

I feel as though all I really got from those hours of reading was the general storyline..

Is it ever better to get a good understanding through a study guide (never used one for English), or should we be reading the full text numerous times to draw on quotes etc. in an exam??

Never read a full shakespearean text in high school, winged it ever since. I recommend reading the text to fully understand as in an exam the question may refer to a particular scene in the play.
