What happens if you get a really low internal mark/ rank and are ranked last in the bottom of your class but you get a really high external mark and get highest mark out of your class (rank 1), is your hsc mark scaled up toward the external or is an average between the 2 calculated?

Average between assessment mark and exam mark is calculated. Your assessment mark (if ranked last) will be the lowest mark received out of the WHOLE cohort (after adding all of the assessment marks and distributing them). Your exam mark will be your mark scaled.

Your hsc mark is the average of these two.

Say you come second last in your cohort with, 55%? Then you go to the external exam (HSC) and top the cohort with 95%, your mark is whoever ranked second last in that external exam, plus the 95% you got. Let's say the person with the second last mark in the HSC exam got 40%...your mark is the average of both 40% and your 95%. This is a rare case, that you can rank that poorly then pull out a magic wand from behind and top the HSC, but it is just an example so you get a jist of what happens. I have seen so many forums that address this topic, it isn't funny. Study Hard, then you won't have this problem, trust me.

This is one of the reason why you should help each other out during the HSC, so if you they do well, you will do well (as long as you have a decent rank)
