Dot Point Books are only for the Sciences. Dot Point books are used for revision so they don't really teach as deeply as a textbook would.

Nah, they have dotpoint for Legal, Business, and PE. But I've only seen them in HSC versions (no prelim).

How hard is Fitzpatrick relative to Couchman and Cambridge?

I agree, you could probably learn the book in a day or two if you really wanted.

Yeah, I reckon it's much better. Much more detailed and better at explaining stuff - good reference as well for when you need to check some stuff.

Most of them are scams, but if you're really desperate, most libraries have particular notes (such as York Notes) which focus on particular texts.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creative Writing is surprisingly quite helpful for Advanced English (completely useless for Extension English and don't buy it if you're already good at Advanced i.e. you're topping it), despite the patronising title. It covers not only creative writing pieces such as short stories and novels, but also includes details on writing effective essays and covers the to do's and not to do's when writing. This book would be extremely helpful to those struggling English students, both Advanced and Standard. A good solid investment of $24.95.

Excel generally is crap.
I tried borrowing one of their english ones at the library - useless in my opinion.
As for the other subjects - Excel is too brief.

QFT.

The contents provided by most Excel books are not just sufficient.

However, some Excel books really stand out among those rubbish series. I am referring to Mathematics, MX1, MX2, General Mathematics, Physics and some other books that I may have missed out.

True that. Just keep on refining your technqiues and your writing skills and you should be fine with English.

Either that... or get a tutor or something.

And I find English tutoring sorta useless too. What can you learn from a tutor that's different from your teacher? [Although, on second thoughts, you could learn ahead - it's just a little harder for English than it is for other subjects such as Maths and Sciences]

I'm not a creative person, especially when writing with descriptive terms, so I think this is the right book for me. Library, here I come . Lets hope there is a copy...

Get the Young Writer's Showcase series, if you're thinking about doing Extension 2 English. It has works from the best Ext 2 English students across the state across a wide range of texts, plus their reflection statements, which you can use as a basis for your own reflection statement.
