Hey guys
i got an offer for B arts in the mid year entry and i'm not sure if i should take it or not any recommendation have u regret doing b of arts?
1- for your first year aren't the subject selection so limited if u are not looking for a language nor history units?
2- did you do your second semester timetable yet? does that mean that mid year students will be stuck to very limited places?
3- I' ve always heard there are no jobs for b of arts students and if u can do a bachelor instead of major it is better eg B of international studies is better than B of arts major in international studies ?

ok congratulations firstly! I don't know what degree/at what uni etc you are doing now (if you are at uni) so i'm can't give you a comparison etc but i'll try to briefly answer you're questions...

1. First year selections- I don't know what you're looking at doing but i always thought there were lots of first year selections. I mean you can chose anything from philosophy to politics to history etc It's probably that in those area's there might only be two or three subjects available, but its good in first year to pick a variety from different areas anyway so that you know what's out there/widen your horizons.

2. Timetables are out but i don't think that means you're necessarily stuck with limited options (do you mean like being able to swap tutes etc?- it shouldn't affect you're ability to chose subjects in any way) Most of my friends haven't even chosen their subjects for next semester, let alone looked at their timetable! Most of the switching of classes occurs in the week before/first week of uni anyway.

3. Jobs for an art degree- well that's a big debate/argument. I like to think a B arts gives you a broad understanding of the world and what you're interested in, its about critical thinking etc. It isn't a professional degree that tunnels you into a job- but i don't think B International Studies is that either. I don't know the intricacies of B Arts majoring in Int Studies, or a B international studies- but generally to me it just seems to be about marketing and really there's no difference coming out with a B Arts or B Int Studies. I'm ready to be corrected, but i think you can generally do the same subjects in both...

hope that helps! :)

This is my first comment on this site and im going to get into this a bit.

I got into B Computer Science and tech at the start of the year and got accepted into ARTS mid year like you.

I just did Maths last semester at Syd and passed that.. Anyway, enough of that.

I got straight out of school did all these crappy jobs and ended up with an ok Job. I worked at the NAB in private banking.

In my experience, when my boss hired someone (who was the same one who told me to go get a degree) he would just look at where they went, if they did ok. And importantly what they were like. We had people who worked there with all types of degrees. Ranging from Arts to Finance and everything in between. Most were on above 100k all the way up to 250k. But its the person AND the Degree as a package.

It will not funnel you into a job as said above, but neither will any degree if you dont have the personality and interest to back it up anyway!

Im going to be doing Govt and international relations major, and then i am able to do an economics major also if I like (as a category B major.)

The way I see it, you might as well do a degree you like and if your really keen and later have a specific direction you'd like to follow, do a more specialised masters which is more sought after anyway..

And its Sydney! you cant go wrong... the Arts entry points are high enough to make it prestigious anyway if that what you are worried about.

And if you get into Sydney, you can go for a Distinction average to change into the commerce degree if that is what you want (or just do the management/eco major).

There are quite a few number of subjects to choose from.

Try the politcal economy or Govt relations or media major and do the second major like I mentioned in something else from another faculty at Sydney. You really have a great selection in the cat B subjects.

I went for this coming semester the following:
- Aust Politics
- World Politics
- Into to Logic and
- macroeconomics.

Best of luck.

do you have any ideas on how to do the timetable because i'm not getting it, it's kind of automatic and its done already isn't?

Worldpolitics should be good. It will be different to what I am used to learning about. Congrats on going with the degree,I think you'll enjoy it.

As for the timetable, it is automatic. If want to change something though, go to SSA (Student Admin) and you can apply to have a subject moved If you have a clash or a day that you need free.

Best of luck.

Hah, I'm doing the same one :)

Anyways...

Not sure about what you want from units and that but as for jobs - once you've done the degree, well I've heard from quite a few people (middle aged business people) if you do the degree with decent overall grades then you shouldn't have much worry getting employment when you're looking for work in alot of different depts. And if you pick your units wisely you can always change later on anyway...
