<3 Newcastle, but regret that I'm 2 subjects into the wrong major. Environmental science program is annoying as the major component is 50% of the course, other 50% is core, no electives, so you're locked in early in your degree. I chose life sciences, but looking at employment prospects and the monies $$ I wish I'd gone for town planning side of things.

Is it cos of the course or the uni?
I initially chose B. Commerce because of the wide career prospects and choices. So i thought to myself, there's bound to be something in commerce that i would find interesting. I decided to major in Accounting and Finance but found them to be extremely dry and dull.
Accounting was all about the AASB and regulations. Finance was heavily focused on stock prices and profit opportunities. Both of these subjects were too theoretical and non-practical. Commerce was all about MONEY.
The only subject in Commerce that i enjoyed was Marketing which involved some degree of creativity. Accounting and Finance had too many rules/formulas/laws to memorise.

I should've done Pharmacy because i highly enjoyed science in high school. Having looked at what my Pharmacy friends have done, i would've much more enjoyed studying drugs and the human body ... rather than accounting and finance which was all about money money money $$$$

i know what you mean kow_dude....im in pretty much same boat except my course is too specialised...--actuarial studies....-__-
mainly because i realized that i did not enjoy studying any of the subjects .....
with regards to the money focus of commerce....its going to happen and be the focus in ANY field.....that's the reality of life....but just that commerce might not let you feel satisfied because its all business orientated and u dont seem to be helping society, unlike health/sciencs where u at least help ppl in a direct way....
....i feel like an ass coz i've finished my degree just this year.....didn't even think about changing course during the degree coz i only treated it as something i HAD to do....

Pharmacy is does not focus about money. It's about studying the chemistry in drugs and their effects of the body. And that to me, makes it more satisfying to study because i know i'll be making a positive impact to society in the future.

I totally agree with your last line. I thought if i'd just choose commerce and get a grad position, i would live happily ever after.

chucknthem: Good to hear you found something you thoroughly enjoy

kow_dude: Yeah, that was totally why I was thinking about Pharmacy aswell. Non money focus. But I also heard that Pharmacy can be retail based since you are still selling products. But overall I think it depends on where you want to focus. But the folks are very against me even considering Pharm. To them it seems like I'm throwing away 4yrs of study and an opportunity to earn high salary for a job that's capped well below 6 figure salary.

A friend of mine had realised in 3rd year out of a 4 year Social Science degree that she hated what she was doing, although she finished it anyway. Upon finishing that degree, she did 6 years of B.Architecture, which she has now finished and is working with a firm, earning peanuts as grad Architects usually do.

Probably safe to say that she wont use much (if any) of the knowledge directly in the career she's in now, although on the bright side, she is now doing something she loves. 10 years at uni straight though (exception of the 1 year gap she had between yr 4 and 5 for B.Architecture as part of the course), straight from high school. Ouch.

B Engineering (Electrical)/B Science (Computer Science) at usyd, just finished 2nd year.

Having a couple of doubts about some of the signals components of the engineering part (in terms of difficulty), but I elected to do those courses next semester. If I can get through next semester, everything should be easy sailing from there.

I'm happy with everything else I'm doing so far however. Only regret is that I didn't combine my degree earlier as I'm really enjoying the computer science part (i transferred only last year from a B.E into a B.E/B.Sci).

Haha, unlike kow_dude, I'm doing pharmacy and kind of regret it...*sigh* the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence hey.

I wish I had done med science instead, I wanted to learn about all things body-related and not just memorise the names of a thousand drugs. But in hindsight I know I made the right decision because you can do a lot of stuff with a pharmacy degree, and med science is either research (eek) or onto grad med or dentistry. I was considering other health sciences esp. at Cumberland campus but none of them seemed to really interest me, when what I wanted was an all round education that only med science could provide.

Actually, the ultimate program I would like to have done is Med Science combined either with an Arts or Music degree.

Commerce/Law at UNSW, transferring from USYD after first year.

I kind of regret transferring because I had stayed I would have been able to pursue a history major. Law is fairly interesting, but not as interesting as studying history IMO, which was always my favourite and one of my best subjects in high school.

On the other hand, I recognise that my choice will be the more professionally useful. I can always come back and do a BA later in life, though currently I may be enjoying myself less than I would be otherwise.

I'm sure there are many people who would prefer to be studying something more personally interesting but in the end the pragmatics of employment need overrule that to an extent.

Well, I hate the Education component more -- it's irrelevant (i.e. nothing to do with professional practice), biased, useless and I hate being told what and how to think.

Sydney Uni is just shit overall, I just haven't enjoyed it. Administration is pathetic, technology is crap, etc.
Wat other uni wud u prefer to transfer to and do the same course? Or wud u stay and do another course?
