I think Yeats' The Lake Isle Of Innisfree could work as a supplementary text for 'Retreat From The Global', particularly in conjunction with Seamus Heaney.

W.B Yeats-The Lake Isle of Innisfree
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings,
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

Also has the bonus of literary cred. ;)

Its actually a Radiohead song.. Track #5 on the 'My Iron Lung' EP. :)

And I like Heaney, not that I've had to study him. His verse translation of Beowulf is excellent.

these are the key points you should cover

- what is the local?

- what are the effects of the retreat?
- how are these represented through language?

manipulate these points to answer the question.. and make sure you have a fair idea of how to define rftg cos you should do this in the first paragraph

Dirt Music by Tim Winton is an excellent additional text for Retreat and it's a novel. I've been told that Cloudstreet works the same too.

The Listmaker by Robin Klein, even if it is a "young kids" text.

i didn't know you could use games as texts... thats pretty cool.

have fun!
