Well i think our - "Aye, Aye, Aye-OO sancta moles suck penii" - is funny. So typically male driven. But no offence to any sancta moles. I mean, any skancta- i mean.. I do like the sancta girls though, the one's i've met are great. Anyone heard "Bumchucker" about paul's? Graphic.. All john's song's are pretty sexist coz of the 'only recently co-ed' thing. But i try to overlook that

Yes one of my very good friends does and she found it difficult, especially living with other people, and the fact that you can become quite insular in such an environment. College on the other hand is very community based albeit this, for some people, can be a disadvantage. Also college is quite hard to get into, for instance Drews (which is where i go) rejects over 5 in 6 applicants!

Also different colleges have different atmospheres: Let me identify my bias to drews as i am in there. But with that said i am glad i am and i see why Drews is the most popular college. One must realise that despite the crap i say against each of the colleges here that each college caters to a different type of person, and for me as a person Drews was the best fit, but one size can never fit all.

- Drews is very easy to live in in terms of initiations and everyone is very nice (albeit this is very true of most colleges). Everyone goes out all the time, but they are also quite academic. That being said there is most certainly an atmosphere whereby Drews ppl will miss lectures to attend important sporting events. But everything is completly voluntary (we do joke about it not being that way but when ppl have not wanted to do something they have NEVER been forced).

- johns: most people who go there are really quite nice, and for girls initiation is not the same as it is for guys (girls get it a little easier - no shaved heads lol). And if you read my post before and are not sure why i changed it its because i found out that the guy who had the alcohol coma thing was not a fresher and he screwd himself.

- Pauls is all male, and i have not had much to do with them because the guys in our college have not done any parties with them. All the girls here say they throw really good parties and the guys who go there all seem to like it quite a lot. But keep in mind it is an all male institution so some male bashing (is rumoured) to have gone on... But i cant confirm that in any way.

- Wesley is also quite good as an all-rounded college. Most of the Wesley ppl say if you cant go to W goto Drews and we say if you cant get into Drews go to Ws... So W is in many ways similar to Drews, but i should leave it to a W person to expand on it...

- Womens and Sancta are different but i have not seen enough differences to seperate them. Both are all-girl environments, which does not entirely exclude guys from coming into the college but it is a little awkward (sprelling?). All things said all the people I know from them seem to be very happy and comfortable in that environment, although some of the seniors say there can be bitchiness (although i have never personally seen any). Both are good if you are uncomfortable living with guys on a daily basis. But with that said in Drews guys and girls are pretty much good mates and dont care. I mean we do everything together, hell the fucking showers are coed...

- residential villages do not have nearly the community aspect of colleges but can give you privacy if you live by yourself and offer simple accomodation. However you miss out on much of the uni/college life and academic benefits. By that i mean that i do com/law at USYD and in my college there are 10 other freshers who do law, and about 30 who do com, so we can all help each other out and we can get tutes in stuff we need help in. Also seniors are able to help out which is a great help...

What's the chances of me getting into college next year as a 2nd year? I'm 17 atm.

a few words: apply early, get involved in the community/sporting... make sure you have good grades... Often you have to be a freak to get in i mean chances are just over 1 in 8 some years...

with all that said one of my best friends here is in second year education so it is certainly possible.

i live in Sydney, so i came to the college for the life and academic support and i have been in no way let down. Frankly i cant imagine uni without college!!!! (see above for differences btw colleges)

Disclaimer: i in no way meant to offend ppl in my above comments as i said college is many things to many (different) people. So just throw yourself into everything and find out what you like and where you fit in.

- Johns has a much harder initiation system (which is very dangerous physically - one guy was put into an alcohol induced coma for 2 days this year. And they also mugged a whole lot of Drews boys and girls and beat them up)... That being said most people who go there are really quite nice, and for girls it is not anywhere near as bad. That being said Johns girls are excluded from almost everything in terms of initiations which really can lead to them not only being left out in terms of feeling like they are a part of the community but it also makes seniors respect them less as members of the college because they did not go through what everyone else did.

I really dont want to start some huge thing btw everyone here, but please dont talk crap

1. The boy that went to hospital was not placed in an alcohol induced coma for two days, he was put on an IV given fluids and released within the same day. Might I also add, that he wasnt some innocent little country boy straight out of school forced to do beer bongs till he fell over but an american exchange student finishing his degree and just drinking at a party not as any part of initiation

2. The mugging had nothing to do with drews at all, a johns guy (also an exchange student) was bottled by a random on the street - why on earth would anyone at johns want to harm a drews student

3. I am a Jet - and i can say that i really dont feel excluded in anyway or respected less, 50% of the freshers are girls, so when you say that we "didnt go through what everyone else did" its really not like that - we did have intitations as an entire group. The jets have very good senior leaders who look out for them and makes sure we dont get any shit but can still have fun and get involved.

- Sledging is all fun and games at college, but dont come on here and talk shit about something you know nothing about (from what i hear youre a spook at drews anyway).

To anyone interested in college, i highly recommend it you will have an amazing time where ever you go if you get involved and enjoy it. Intiation at johns is tough for the boys (but not "very dangerous physically" i have no idea WTF quintin is talking about ppl at drews have gone to hospital to have their stomach pumped in previous years), but you dont have to do anything you dont want to. Im sure all my mates agree that they are having the best time and all the crap was worth it. The girls do get it easier than the boys, but i dont feel excluded at all and they are slowly trying to introduce traditions for the jets too girls can choose how involved they want to get in the drinking etc.
anyway sorry, i got a little worked up but its stupid to sledge another colleges reputation simply going off rumours that you may have heard while you were studying in your room

I suggest if you want to know anything about any of the colleges, find someone that goes to the college that you are interested dont ask someone from another college, because we are conditioned to be fiercely loyal to our own within in our first 24 hours lol, ive spoken to freshers from all the colleges and they all seem to be having an amazing time

Hello!
I decided to go to usyd @ the very last minute so didn't really get the chance to apply for a college this year... I'm 19 this year so If I applied for next year I would be 20 by the time I started going there.

Would that be weird?

I guess what I'm asking is how old is too old to be living in a college? I get the impression just from the way everyone talks that people can only enter college straight out of highschool and at age 17 and are out of there by the time theyre 20. Are there many people who apply for college in their 2nd year of uni or is it not really common?

Most of the freshers are school leavers or students who have taken a year off and then gone to uni so no if you went to college you wouldn't be too old. There are people who apply for college in their 2nd year of uni but you'll find that most of the freshers are 1st year uni students. But college is awesome and i really recommened it!!!

Im a second year and a fresher and i got in lol
I dont think being a second year will hurt your chances at all - as long as you have a good-ish UAI and good marks at uni you should be sweet
but apply early - good luck

2. Are you allowed to have your boyfriend stay over if you stay at the women's college?

I dont go to womens but im pretty sure not a single one of the colleges has a curfew lol, and yep you should be allowed to have your bf over you can at all the co-eds and i really dont think its any different at womens or sancta
about your other question regarding being 20 and a 2nd year - this year at my college there are quite a few second years and even more ppl returning from gap - i would say there are about 50% the rest being school leavers
Im a 2nd year and it honestly doesnt make a difference to me, you get treated like a fresher and make friends with them but go to lectures with sophs and other 2nd year freshers - its good because you arent stressed about uni etc when you start at college because youve already done a year
if you are still concerned you know you can apply for next semester there might be openings
College is heaps of fun - i wouldnt let the thought of being 20 put you off in anyway

in answering your first Q (from before)... it is not at all weird coming in later, we have lots of freshers who were 20... frankly you dont really notice...

1. i have not heard of any curfew for anyone... the staff go home at night and we do whatever... currently we are riding bycycles down the *crash* staircases... ouch!

2. as for your bf thats fine as far as i know, generally in drews you can have someone stay over a couple of nights. Whether he is allowed to eat is the dining hall you would have to check further.

anyway personally i dont know too much about womens other than it is a bitch to find your way out of at 2am ... good luck. and as shes_jinxed said dont let anything put you off coming

okay here is the reply: i dont live there but i have quite a few friends that do. It is not quite the same as college you dont get the tutes and i dont think you get cooked for...

There are quite a few people meeting each other there, but no where near what happens at 'o week' with college.

with all that said some people really enjoy the privacy and extra room. It is close to uni and Newtown's cheap food. And there are quite a few nice people there (at least who i associate with)...

hey there,

im considering going to USYD next year and if I do i'll be definately trying to get into a college. I was wondering if anyone could tell me which college has the biggest/ better rooms generally and which has the best food?

Also, are you able to move your own bed into your room? Or is there a rigid policy on keeping their single beds?

any info would be great
