Since this was discussed quite extensively (and off-topic) in the other thread (http://community.boredofstudies.org/505/cars-automobiles/229436/worst-car-road-today.html), I thought I would create a new thread with the latest updates to the news and for any more discussion on SAAB cars.

Saab deadline extended, factory up and running
December 31, 2009 at 11:25 am by Danny Tan ·

If the original December 31 deadline for negotiations holds through, Saab will be officially consigned to history come midnight. But it won’t, as General Motors has extended the deadline for a final offer from Spyker Cars until January 7, Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller said in a text message. Reuters also reported Muller saying that he beleived there are multiple bidders for Saab.

Meanwhile, in a suprising move Saab will restart some production lines again in January for the new 9-5 and 9-3 Cabriolet. “We have the orders and we have to deliver them as usual. The factory has to continue again,” Saab spokesman Eric Geers said. “We are preparing the wind-down process. At the same time we are open to options, to bids that come in. Therefore the deadline has also been dropped,” he added.

Spyker, an exclusive sportscar maker backed by Russian and Arab money, is keen to buy Saab for its technical resources and distribution network. The loss-making company made an improved bid for Saab on Dec 20, two days after initial talks with GM collapsed. The saga continues…

Formula One boss launches Saab rescue bid: reports

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has teamed up with a Luxembourg investment firm to launch a last-minute rescue bid for Swedish carmaker Saab, British media reports said Friday.

Luxembourg-based Genii Capital announced it was interested in making an offer with Ecclestone, just as the deadline for final bids for Saab expired at 2200 GMT Thursday, the BBC reported.

The privately-held firm said it would "aggressively work towards a successful closing of the transaction with all the relevant stakeholders of the company," according to the BBC.

It said it believes Saab has "tremendous brand value in a number of key automotive markets, as well as an innovative image," the reports said.

Genii already has links with Ecclestone after it last month bought a stake in the Renault Formula One team, allowing the team to remain in the sport.

US carmaker General Motors announced in December it would wind up Saab, which employs 3,400 people in Sweden.

However GM extended a deadline to consider offers for Saab after Dutch sports car maker Spyker approached the US automaker with a last-ditch proposal.

Spyker chief executive officer Victor Muller said on Thursday it would submit a definitive, updated bid for Saab.

Saab is one of four storied brands that GM is shedding as part of a massive restructuring effort that began in 2005 and accelerated last year when the largest US automaker went bankrupt.

Analysts have warned that some 8,000 jobs could be lost with Saab's closure.

BBC News - General Motors winds down Saab despite sale talks

General Motors (GM) says it has begun the process to "wind down" Saab, but will also continue efforts to find a buyer for the Swedish carmaker.

GM said it had selected restructuring group AlixPartners to supervise an "orderly" winding down at Saab, which it expected to take several months.

The US group also confirmed that it had received several proposals for Saab, which it was continuing to evaluate.

One bid has come from a group including Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone.

Swedish union IF Metall, which has a representative on Saab's board, criticised GM's decision to start the liquidation process while still continuing to explore a sale.

"It is irresponsible of GM as an owner to go in two directions, both pursuing the sale [of Saab] and the winding-up," said Stefan Loefven, the union's leader.

Bid interest

Late on Thursday, two groups said that they had made bids for Saab.

One group includes F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, in partnership with Luxembourg-based private investment company Genii Capital, which recently invested in Renault's F1 team.

Mr Ecclestone told the Bloomberg news agency that Saab was "a good brand".

The second confirmed bid has come from Dutch sports carmaker Spyker.

Swedish newspapers have also speculated that there has been a third bid approach by a group of Swedish business leaders, but this has not been confirmed.

"We will see what we can do, in order to, if possible, contribute to a positive sale of Saab," Joeran Haegglund, Swedish enterprise ministry state secretary, told Swedish news agency TT on Friday.

He will lead a Swedish delegation to Detroit on Saturday for talks early next week with officials from GM and Ford, which is in the process of selling its Swedish unit Volvo to Chinese carmaker Geely.

Protracted sale

GM has been trying to sell Saab since January last year.

In June, GM announced that it had agreed to sell it to sports carmaker Koenigsegg, only for the Swedish company to pull out of the deal in November.

Saab, which employs 3,400 people in Sweden, lost 3bn kronor (£255m; $412m) in 2008, and it has not made a profit since 2001.

Founded in 1937, Saab was bought by GM in 1989.

Saab has been sold to Spyker.

GM To Sell Saab To Spyker - MotorAuthority

The never-ending story of Saab's sale looks to be finally over, and the brand born from jets will be adding a propeller to the mix. Dutch supercar maker Spyker has reached a deal to purchase the brand from GM. Trading in Spyker stock was halted early this morning by the Netherlands Authority pending an announcement by the company, and now GM has made it official.

Terms of the deal will see Spyker forming a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, which will be the brand's standard bearer. Closing is expected by mid-February if things go smoothly.

“General Motors, Spyker Cars, and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we're all happy for the positive outcome,” said John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances.

Completing the full transfer of Saab will take at least a month yet, but the sale enables Saab to avoid further winding-down steps and to move forward with new product creation and production. Just yesterday word of production of the 2011 Saab 9-4X broke, with other models, including the 2010 Saab 9-5 now expected to hit retail soon as well.

Spyker is a tiny company in the grand scheme of things, turning out just a handful of supercars each year, but its dedication and perseverance throughout the Saab purchase indicates it is committed to the brand over the long haul. Saab's rabidly loyal fan base will no doubt be hopeful for the future, with their beloved Swedish marque saved from GM's brand exodus and given a new lease on life.

“Throughout the negotiations, GM has always had the hope to find a solution for Saab that would avoid a wind down of the brand,” added Nick Reilly, president, GM Europe. “We’ve worked with many parties over the past year, including governments and investors, and I’m very pleased that we could come to such a good conclusion, one that preserves jobs in Sweden and elsewhere. GM will continue to support Saab and Spyker on their way forward.”

The sale began its long and turbulent path during GM's bankruptcy last summer, attracting multiple bidders, but never seeming to get much in the way of real traction until Koenigsegg AB, itself another firm whose primary automotive business is the construction of high-end supercars, managed to secure a deal, but was later forced to back out at the last minute due to funding complications. That move prompted comparisons to Saturn's failed sale to Penske Automotive Group, with many despairing of any future for the quirky, boxy brand.

Spyker never let up, however, despite Ed Whitacre's statements on the sale, saying in December, "It's real easy--just show up with the money and you can have it. Nobody's come with the money." Now that Spyker has come up with the money, the future of Saab is once again bright, if still somewhat uncertain. Saab's position within the market has been tenuous over the last several years, with stale products and weak sales, prompting GM's decision to sell the brand in the first place.

Stay tuned as we uncover what Spyker plans to do to turn things around, and what it plans for the future. We'll bring you the latest as it breaks.
