Commonly people would say investing in shares is the purchase of shares (a small ownership fraction of a business). However the word 'investing' will have different meanings to different groups.

When you buy shares of a company, you are "giving" money to a company so that they can use it to fund things for their business (Infrastructure..blah).

A share is a part ownership of a company. So if Microsoft had 100,000 shares and you bought 1 share, you have 1/100,000 part ownership of Microsoft.

You give money to a company, and once the company makes a profit, you share some of it. When the shares reach a reasonable cost, you sell your shares, thereby, making a profit.
