Scaling (need help on selecting subjects) (1 Viewer)

Ummm i was wondering if these were subjects that would scale my HSC mark and ATAR up or down (providing that these subjects scale up)

Advance English Advance English
3U Mathematics 4u Mathematics
Biology Biology
Music Music
Chemistry Chemistry
Ancient History


Can you guys help if these scale up please and if the right subject drop in yr 12? Thanks heaps =D

Music probably not so much...biology only if the rest of your course does really well at it. everything else should be fine if you do good.

You shouldn't be doing Advanced English when you can't even sound out/spell the word "Advanced". Advance is a completely different word - it's a verb meaning 'to come forward' and it is never used as an adjective, whilst Advanced is used quite frequently as an adjective.

Music? Is it Music 2? Music 2 is a good subject. So is Music 1, but I could do it easily if I tried and it has no scaling advantage.

Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 both fall under the subject header of "Maths". And maths is a great subject. The content of the courses is fine, but teachers of mathematics tend to suck, i.e. they know their maths but they don't know how to do anything but ask you to "please do all of Exercise 4, kids". That's not teaching, it's instructing. Instructors are not the same as teachers./ a teacher shouldn't just tell you what to do; they should explain, define, describe comfort and love (in a non-sexual way, the love a friend and son share).

Biology and Chemistry are good subjects. They're interesting, Chemistry tends to be quite dull though at least at HSC-level. The Chemistry course for the HSC is basically a course that was designed purely to kill student's interest in science and chem. Biology however is a much more interesting course as it doesn't purport to be mathematical as Chemistry does in the syllabus. Doing subjects because you think they'll have maths in them is stupid - only maths has any real maths in it these days. Even physics is dumbed down beyond belief.

You'll love Ancient if you're into sexy ancient societies and promiscuous gods. Lol


Just take ESL instead of English (Advanced) and you're set.

It is quite wrong to claim that subjects in their own right are 'scaled up' or 'scaled down'. All subjects actually scale down except at Band 6 level. But this has no impact on the ATAR as aggregate scores (x/500) do not correspond exactly to ATARs. E.g. an aggregate of 400/500 should yield an ATAR of 80.00, but it tends to yield a higher rank.

You seriously speak as though you have experienced these courses before - how can you qualify the statement that "chemistry is boring at HSC level" when you yourself have not even completed the course as yet? You cannot make a judgement based on other peoples' perceptions because everyone has different views about different subjects, and each individual student has varying likes/dislikes.

I'm sick and tired of you making such stupid comments - and misleading many fellow BOSers who have come on here genuinely seeking advice. And then when you turn around and provide such unsubstantiated 'advice', it is a total cop-out as to this forum's true function.

umm just pointing it out that if u go into yr 11 with the mindset of dropping someting (ancient history)_ in ur case...you wont do well at it..wat i mean is that dont decide what to drop when u dont even know about the subject.who knows u mite like it and end up dropping something else.......i did the exact same thing where i was certain i was gonna drop VA....but its not a good thing to do

4U maths scales the most in these subjects. Chemistry scales better than Biology, but they are great subjects too! I heard that modern history scales much better than ancient history but if you like ancient history and you do very well, than they're probably the perfect choices for you. Don't do Standard english, Advance is way better (good choice)! =)

Um, I was trying to help. I was not trying to talk him out of doing Chemistry. Sorry if it sounded that way. I have experienced these courses before. My friends did them and I have read the syllabi and textbooks. I'm not speaking from no experience, I'm speaking from some experience - there is a difference between 0 and >0.

I'm not misleading anyone. Ultimately he will make a choice based on what he wants to do. Me saying don't do Chem doesn't mean he won't. If he wants to do Chemistry fine, but I know that half the HSC chemistry class of 2009 at MCK, my school, didn't enjoy it one bit. And if you want to suggest that Chemistry is mathematical, look at the syllabus and you'll see that you're wrong.

OP- Do not make the same mistake as i did. I originally shose my subjects based on scaling. This was the biggest mistake ever!

Thankfully, when i was at the beginning of year 12 my school allowed me to change from physics to biology and i dont regret it.

If you choose subjects you like enough to care about and put effort in, scaling will have a marginal impact and you'll have a much more enjoyable hsc experience.

Also, i find HSC chemistry extremely interesting and many people in my class share this view, the above poster hasn't even done the course!

I never knew you could actually change subjects in the beginning of year 12?

You can if your principal of your school signs a form for the bos saying according to him, you have completed the preliminary course.

Some schools make you do the eyarly test, others all assessment tasks.
Mine just said go for it and let me move cause of my good marks in science
Didn't have to do a thing, spent the whole night before planning a speech i didn't have to use in the end haha, before i could bring up my points the subjects coordinator said she was happy with it

Despite my experience, dont expect for this to be an option haha, best to be safe then sorry.
