Could someone please explain to me how this affects your atar?
I've seen in so many threads where people are like 'oh my school is only ranked blah, i have no hope' or 'what is your school ranked, that would certainly have an effect?'. Surely, if someone does well it doesnt not matter what school they are from, whether it be ranked number 1 or 1001...

You have answered your own question.

There's no effect, its just an indication as to how your school stands in comparison with the rest of the state. Also how you might go by looking at rankings.

Doesnt mean it cant change.

It doesn't affect your ATAR but you can estimate your ATAR using it. Like if you are average at a school ranked 500^th it's a good general indicator that your ATAR will be around 50.
