Did anyone else have a lecture from Brian Brennan? He talked about the orders of architecture to us, and the column in the picture was certainly corinthian (the foliage looking stuff at the top defines them).

He wrote an excellent textbook which has everything you'd bascially ever need to know about P/H.

Ok.. ok this is really getting to me now because im worried i didnt do the write thing. Wasn't the question on the economy something along the lines of "What do sources A and B (the fishing equipment and the fullery picture) reveal about the industry of pompeii and herculaneum, make reference to these and other sources in your answer" ... why is everyone going on talking about prostitution "and like 6 other industries" when answering this question, im pretty sure a picture of fishing equipment dosnt reveal the role olive oil or prostitutes played in the economy. To me it seems as if the question is asking us to describe/assess the role that the fishing/fullery industries played in the economy... It is beyond me how these sources would lead you to prostitution and or any other industry. I know it says make reference to other sources but only to support your arguement for the importance those TWO represented industries played otherwise you could just bring anything into it and i doubt that is what the question was designed to do.

Lets just say i'm wrong and i really doubt i am, would an in depth answer on those two industries with 4 or so references to historians and quotes be enough to satisfy the criteria? ahhhh so worried! haha =[

Also... for all those who called the fullery a bakery it said UNDER the picture "The fullery of stephanus".... lol -_-

umm im pretty sure your wrong.

the question was open to move into other industries. its always like that for the 8 marker. they do not limit you to the source.

I did 6 (including the two in the source) with reference to other sources, i.e EVIDENCE found of those industries. E.g. (extremely simplified) wine presses for wine, bakeries with stone ovens for bakeries, brothels for sex lol, etc. I also mentioned both had a fishing industry and Pompeii was famous for its garum, but Herculaneum was more of a small fishing town/hamlet whilst Pompeii was a bustling commercial town.

It says to talk about Industry, which basically is another word for economy.

I agree, the question was open to go into other industries as well; to be honest if you only wrote about fishing and the fullery then you didnt really answer the question.

I don't think you were meant to talk about anything other then the industries represented by the sources which were the fishing equipment (leads to garum associated products) And the fullery. So wine, fertile soil and vineyards dosn't really come into it lol.
Wehrmacht, they are industries arent they?

i did that too :) i talked about how the profits of tourism are used for the funding to restore the sites, but it's cyclical as the effects of tourism are the reason it needs reconstruction. i mentioned a few groups (anglo-american project etc) who had been working on conservation, how herculaneum stopped excavations for fear of damage and linked it all to the use of new technologies such as ground penetrating radar. i mentioned sara bisel and how she found the skeletons on the beach had been moved, then linking THAT to things such as plaster casts as the tourists wanted to experience what life was like in that moment of time. then writing a bit about the ethical side, the removal of bones etc, mentioning aboriginal burial and mt st helens. i dunno. i kinda had a brain explosion and wrote everything i could remember.

I'm pretty sure they were Corinthian columns. Could of been Doric though....
Why the hell would they be Doric. You have Pompeii confused with Sparta you idiot. lol

You can't possibly know what aspect of Greece they originated from. They were just 'Greek'.. that's all you had to say.

Q1 - Atrium and Impluvium

Q2 - I just threw in everything I knew about the baths, hopefully I'll go ok.

For the tourism question I said what impact the tourists have on the site and how the management has responded to it (taking in entrace fees and putting it back into the site, etc)

Actually, Doric columns are indeed present at Pompeii. In fact, in the House of the Silver Wedding, which was the house given in the source. Except the Doric columns there are in the peristyle, not the Atrium. The ones in the Atrium of the House of the Silver Wedding are Corinthian; you can tell by looking at the style of their capitals.

But I asked my Ancient teacher and she said it won't matter if you put the wrong Greek-type column. I suppose as long as you said "columns" it's ok.

From my reading, I would disagree that the question necessarily precluded talk of other industries. But I would basically agree with the 'essence' of your point. This is basically because we have only a small amount of space to write in (equivalent to 1/2 an a4 page I adduce); and we of course could talk about the totality of the industries/economy for a far greater length. As such, the focus of the answer would have had to be on what the given sources show, imply and infer. I would agree that you would have been hard pressed to discuss these industries in proper detail and have a lot of room left to discuss the other industries short of just name dropping them and their evidence (not of course that that would be inherently bad). Some selectivity is always needed in such limited answers.

So basically, if you discussed those to industries in detail (bearing in mind of course that this course requires us to over-infer things, so that nets=>fishing=>importance in trade/diet=>garum and fullery=>wool industry=>linen trade with Egypt) and brought in enough external source material, I would say you should be fine - certainly not below 6-8.

I was very pleased (in my immaturity) that I was able to mention brothels in this section. xD
For the industry question I talked about how the main industries in P&H were the food industry (talked about how geography effected this and that fishing net source) and the service industry (talked about fulleries and brothels and things like that).
I also mentioned that the nature of industry in P&H was privately owned. Like, families would set up businesses in the front of their houses and such.

I didn't think the source was the main focus at all. I thought the point was to use those as a starting point, to examine a range of industries, using your own knowledge of other sources to back those up e.g. Seneca said the smell of garum pervaded the city, there were 81 loaves of carbonised bread found in bakeries, Lazer's bone analysis about teeth and bread, ect.

+1

yay thats what i did :)

they would never expect the whole answer on the sources, they would want you to show other knowledge. :)

  • For the garum i linked it to the House of the Faun mosaic of sea life, Pliny the Elder commenting on the quality of garum and i think Oscan records on the Herculaneum gate being called the 'salt gate' or the tholos had fish remains,
  • the fullery i went for the building of eumachia and the inscription found there from the fuller's guild, also the urinals placed around the city,
  • wine and oil was good, i talked about Virgil's 'georgics' and how he mentions the good wine, Pliny the Elder saying that Bacchus was better than Ceres, Jashemski's study of viticulture and John Day's study of villas and how they had wine/oil making facilities;
  • pistrinas i talked about the bakery of modestus and the loaves found, also the Bisel's study found the pumice in teeths from the loaves.
  • all in all i think if i don't get full marks im gonna be pissed lolllz
egypt to ramses II killed me though...
