How does myelin speed up nerve conductance?
Underneath the myelin, the electric current of an action potential travels down microscopic cables. At the gaps between the myelin,called the Nodes of Ranvier, the action potential is recharged from ions outside the cell. This serves to give the action potential a boost at every gap and speeds conductance from ~30 m/s up to 120 m/s!
