Usually if it's semi-formal, you wouldn't wear a long dress.

Evening wedding (6pm) - a cocktail dress
or
Daytime semi-formal events - an appropriate short dress or a dressy suit.

I have one of them coming up in two weeks. So i got a new dress, cuts at the knees, as halter neck and is a black and white swirl pattern. The material is smooth.
I am also looking at getting a dress that has a diagonal cut, longest length is just below knees, again a halter neck. But this time it have a black and white leaf and vine pattern, but not overbearing, very spare.

Either of those with a pair of heels and my hair pulled up.

there are so many nice 50s style day/cocktail dresses you could wear. Portmans has stacks at the moment...

I don't think a shirt & pants combo will cut it for a semiformal dress code, that is more smart casual.

A kneelength cocktail dress will be fine I think.

Something soft, feminine and flowy, light-coloured of course, depends on ur skin tone, but I'd love to wear warm colours such as pink or rose...something that doesn't show the cleavage and is just below or sits on the knees. A cocktail dress as mentioned =)...don't wear pants!
