I could not go completely "shaven" (or have had the nerve yet.. I don't want to be 13 again!) just for weirdness, pain (I wax, and there ain't no blade coming that close to my vadge), ingrowns and regrowth.

I do have an extended bikini wax though, and the rest is trimmed to within an inch of its life. Why is more needed?

I agree. Waxing.
With shaving the hair can grow back in a matter of days.
With waxing it can be 4-6 weeks.
Also, the longer you wax, the less the hair comes back.

And guys- why would you be considered a fag for shaving your pubes?
