He was my teacher's favourite.
but still that wouldnt have that much of an impact on your internal results lol.. if it did you should have complained

I just find it weird that you did so well and the people who were tied first with you did so poorly

well done though

Clearly my other marks show that I can write properly. English is far more time-stressful in my opinion and thus my handwriting, which is normally quite messy, would have become worse.

There is no need to be rude.
Sorry if it came across as rude, but think about what you are saying. If they can read the response you will lose minimal or no marks for handwriting. If they can't read it, they cannot give marks. Now in the event your handwriting was too messy, nothing can be done. They can't remark, because they can't read it. Unless you physically have to dictate it to them, which doesn't happen.

I see what your point completely. Isn't it possible (and I know it happens) that when teachers couldn't be bothered marking something which is quite messy, but not illegible, some have been known to just give a C range mark so it still passes through the system?

I know it probably is my exam that is the issue but I still think I should check.

On the topic of exam handwriting, this is what cem had to say (she is a HSC marker):

As an HSC marker can I just say that we will try to read it - but if we can't read it we can't mark it.

It doesn't get handed to some specialist, it doesn't get handed to a typist, it doesn't get handed to the Senior Marker.

What happens is that the marker assigned the paper is allowed to consult with another marker to see if they can work out a few more words - and that is usually the SM - for the simple reason that if one marker in the group can't read it the chances are that the second marker won't be able to read it and so the SM will be consulted again and finally if they two marks are far enough apart it will be taken back to the SM anyway - who would then be reading it for the third time.

Handwriting is a part of the communication skill set and you are being assessed on your ability to communicate - so if it can't be read it can't be marked.

Another furphy I hear every so often is that students are called in to read their work to the markers - again no - that would be totally unfair on the students who do the HSC overseas or even just the rural areas of the state.

If your handwriting is bad then you need to spend time working on that e.g. practice by writing out your notes so that you are studying and practicing your handwriting at the same time - and as you would need to concentrate on what you are writing it might even improve your studying.
To add to the most that was linked - I have been marking for over 20 years and have come across only 3 scripts in that time that I had to take to another marker for help. Sadly two of them were this year as the standard of handwriting I had to deal with this year was definitely worse than in the past (and we put that down to this year being the first group who had the laptops since Year 9). Other markers I spoke to said the same thing - standard of handwriting has deteriorated but...the number of scripts that needed help were still very very low. By help I mean actually having two markers sitting with a script and trying to decipher it not where you lean across to your next door neighbour and ask them to help with a word here and there.

We are professionals and teachers who would want other markers to take a lot of care with our students responses so we take a lot of care with the scripts we are given.

Compared to people on here this is far from anything great. ATAR predictions anyone?

Fair enough, still check. But regarding giving a mark blindly, that doesn't happen.

Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it.

I'm from a rural school so those are a great set of marks for my school. I'm so happy with all the other ones. The 83 in English Advanced was still the top of my year. Atar prediction is around 94.5, but I could've gotten 96-7 if I had gotten a 89-90 in English, which is pretty gutting.

Is 94.5 considered a good ATAR?

All about perspective. If you worked hard and it was your aim, then you have nothing to be ashamed of and you should be very proud of 94.5. It is not an easy feat at all.

As I said last night, it isnt for us to say really. If you worked hard for it and are happy with it, then it is a great ATAR.
Yeah I see what you're saying. But if you met someone in the street with a 94.5 ATAR would that generally be considered good and respectful?

If you honestly believed you did everything you could to prepare, and you put in the effort, then yes it is good. Not everyone gets 99.95, at the end of the day its a rank. If you ran at the Olympics in the 100m, would you be disappointed in last? Of course because you gave it your all but at the end of the day someone else beat you. So maybe you could have gotten 96-97, so 95 is still good.

I dont really look at the ATAR to be honest. I would be more inclined to respect a person who got a lower ATAR but put in a good effort, than someone who got a higher ATAR, but did hardly any work.

In uni, you work out quick that there was more to high school than a number at the end.

I'm hoping to do a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts at ANU next year. It should get me in because I get a few bonus points. Is it true that nobody ever talks about the ATAR ever at Uni? If I get 95 I'll be stoked that's a mark I can be proud of but if it's down at 93 (because the calculator will be off with the cohort and whatnot) I wouldn't be too happy.

Generally speaking, no one ever speaks about their ATAR at uni. It's something which is used to get you into uni, it's not a badge of honour in any sense.

I don't think it would really matter, the important thing is just getting into your course because after all it is just a rank to go into uni.

So what's really being said here is that even though it ranks the entire state it is generally in the wider world not considered a measure of one's intellectual capacity? (Obviously my teachers have told me this over and over but I'm interested in the university (both students and teachers) and employer perception
