i do ext2 so i've found a lot of ways..
Before you really write, you should have character maps, plot maps etc pasted right in front of where you write. Remember you're merely just writing what your characters would do.. So if unsure what happens next, just refer to the character map to se what mr.x would do in y situation. It's quite a nice way to write I'd say.
Another way (which works more for me) is getting smashed. call it fucked up haha but it works really well for me. Funnily I tape myself in that situation and the next day see my rationale for writing something in the way it is. Of course, this happens very rarely but nevertheless, it's something that produces very pleasing results.
Take what you will. In the end, it is about you finding your own way
There are heaps of resources (all around you) that can give you ideas, it's you that has to see which ones of them work for you.
