Oh yeah because I have to cover my whole walking distance, not just the distance between my my house and my starting. So my displacement would be 100m west??
Correct. If someone was to tell you just their displacement such as 50 metres west. We wouldn't know how far they have travelled as they could have done 100 metres east then 150 metres west or 1000 metres west and 950 metres east.

So for displacement, unless the person changed direction or course during their jouney, it will be zero? What if it a straight line of 500m, you just have to run that distance so you can't go back to your starting point. What would be the displacement then? The same thing as distance?

Yes it would, but don't forget the direction. Good logical thinking.

So your displacement is always how far away you land from your starting point. So in that case, what would be the displacement question of that mountain question I asked?

Could you re-write the sentence? I can't comprehend it. Did you go back from the mountain? Where did you "land"?

If I am starting from Point A to travel on a mountain to Point B which is when I land down from the mountain, and I stopped there. I didn't go back to the mountain. The whole distance that I covered from walking to the mountain and coming down was 120m.

Did you come back to the same side or the other side? Don't worry about it too much. If you landed on the other side, trigonometry must be used to calculate your displacement. They will never ask you anything like that in the Year 10 School Certificate. But it's good that you are eager.

No, I didn't land on the other side. I started from Point A and climbed up the mountain and landed on Point B which is the point where I came down, and I stopped on Point B. And Point A to Point B distance is 120m.

Correct. If you landed on the same side, same starting place, your displacement would be zero.

Hey QuantumQueen,

I think there is a strong chance you will grasp Physics well. Why do I say this? Well you seem really keen for it, so it may be hard work but if you're motivated you'll do it you know? I think you definitely can do Physics given your interest.

What other subjects are you doing? I hear you say you regret picking CAFS? I know three people swapped out of CAFS in the first four weeks of Yr 11 cause they didn't like it. Do you have that at your school where you can swap subjects early in term 1?

No, I didn't go back to my starting point because we are talking about a straight line here. I did not travel the mountain and the land on Point B and go back to Point A, I stopped at Point B so isn't my distance placement just 120m?

You mean East, right?
You house was 400m in some random direction (I'm assuming East) and then you went back 300m to the left (West).
Therefore 400(East) - 300(West) = 100(East)

Vector Diagrams are the best:

. . . . . . . . . . . . 400m
Starting point. ------------------> House
. . . . . . . . . . . End <-------------
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 300m

Thanks a lot. I hope I can do well in Physics. It would mean so much to me because I have always hated science; struggled to get a hold of the concepts, and most of the time, I have been getting a D on my report. I'm doing Legal Studies, 2 Unit Maths, Standard English, Society and Culture, and CAFS. Yeah, I think we can do have an option where we change subjects but obviously we have make sure that the other subject we wanna do has a spot left in it.

I am confused about where you "landed".

I am not looking at it from the house to the 100m distance, I'm looking at it from 100m distance to my house, so it would be west, wouldn't it? Are you meant to look at it the other way around?

Point B. I landed on Point B which is the point where I finished my journey. I didn't go back to my starting point. I landed at the end of my journey. A straight line.

Why did you pick physics if you hate science?!
You pick subjects you are good at, are interested in, and/or genuinely enjoy!!!

Why did they let you do physics?!

For example, pretend this is a mountain.

Walking the whole thing is 120m, and I finished my journey on Point B and didn't move after that, so my displacement is 120m, right?

If you say "I'm turning right" and then turn left you're fucking up.
You don't turn right in perspective to the cars on the opposite side of the road, you turn in perspective to where you are.
So if you said you were going west after reaching the house it is assumed you are travelling to the left on a compass!

Yes. 120m to the right hand side or to the east. Don't forget your direction.
