Hi guys!

I do Math Extension 2 but do not do physics (and have no tutoring), and the rest of my class does do physics. How similar is physics to MXX content? Should I learn ahead for the vectors and mechanics topics to keep up, or is doing physics not that much of a help?

Thanks!

u chill, i think learning ahead for vectors/mechanics would be useful in general
for mechanics, make sure ur integration is at least decent

i did 4u before physics and tbh, doesn't rly help ion think

physics vectors are a lot more barebones than 4u vectors

the only thing in physics that'd help with 4u is mod 2 with forces/pulleys i reckon

There isn't really a heavy dependency on HSC physics for mechanics in maths extension 2.
As in you need a level of understanding about what are the forces and know the different form of acceleration but you don't need to know the entire HSC physics syllabus to understand those.

After setting up your direction(which way is +ve), listing the forces(resolve into components if needed) and use one of the form of acceleration : the majority of the work is actually just integration(with given initial conditions/limits of integration).

I think if anything mx2 helps with physics not vice versa, bc the way you calculate in mx2 is calculus based which is not taught in phys, phys is just the suvat equations. If you still want to learn ahead tho that might be good if you’ve got the time or if the rest of your class might be tutored (I tried learning mech ahead by myself). You might need to know integration first though. 4U vectors are actually not much physics at all that’s probably more 3u 4u is mostly just proving things and testing intersections and whatnot.

In my opinion: it would be very helpful to read up on the part of Physics on Mechanics: understand the part on motion, Newton's 3 Laws of Motion, understand a bit on Friction, esp that there is a maximum for an object on a given surface = mu x normal reaction. In reading this topic, you'd have been introduced to a bit on vectors. Key thing is to gain a good idea of what a force is, what is acceleration, displacement, distance etc. This list may not be complete.

Thanks so much guys! I’ve only learnt basic integration so far (some of the advanced stuff), but once my assessment block is over and I’ve got more integration under my fingers, I’ll have a look at mechanics. I remember in Year 10 science struggling a little with the concept of turning as acceleration, but fingers crossed I’ll be fine 🙏
