Given that;

it usually has more long reaching and long term effects
is usually sustained
has (imo) more evil intentions behind it

i believe that mental abuse should be policed more aggressively than it currently is, rather than being treated, more or less, as a joke. A case by case basis, of course.

I'd like to see katie tully et al locked up for their abuse of poor andrew quah :(

discuss!

all you said is probably true, but i can't see how something so underlying and hard to efficiently identify could be reported/investigated/punished to the same extent that physical abuse can be.

If you're not physically controlling them to some degree, if they don't like the "mental abuse" they can simply avoid the abuser.

If the abuser persists in contacting them when its clear they don't want it, this has really crossed into the physical realm.
(1) Emotional abuse can engender a degree of dependence - e.g. debasing someone to the point that they feel worthless causing them to remain in a relationship which, although pathological, nonetheless exists and so is attainable (which is significant if their self-esteem is completely crushed). In other words, for this and other reasons, it is not as simple as 'just walk away'.

(2) The abuser needn't always be aware that the victim doesn't want to be treated in such a manner (e.g. they could have a profound lack of psychological insight, simply be ignoring the relevant signs, or similar).

P.S. Humans are not rational, free agents.
