This is only my second Physics lesson. I have the worst teacher and I literally hate the man, he demoralizes us in class and the list on goes to hate him, BUT the point is I am required to design a prac write-up for:

Average speed and Instantaneous speed. I know plenty of ideas for a practical such as this but I don't know how to measure or at least find out an object's instantaneous speed at any certain point.

Help would be greatly appreciated, even if you could throw in some ideas or if you know the resolute answer :D

Thanks in advance.

You could use a weight and trolley system on a table. That's about as far as I know about Physics.

isnt a speedometer on a car a measurer of instfantaneous speed?

Yeah, might be pretty mediocre, but that's all I'm bothered to do.

As far as Year 11 Physics goes, it is impossible to measure instantaneous velocity/speed, because you have to use a speedometer, which measures time from point A to point B in the real time continuum. From the data which the speedometer gives you, the only thing you can do is get the distance and use the d/t formula, which is the AVERAGE speed.

One way instantaneous velocity is calculated is using a speed gun... EM waves are shot out, and they hit the vehicle. Depending on how fast the vehicle is moving, the waves are distorted in a certain way, and hence the instantaneous velocity is calculated.

Yeah, speedometer for instantaneous speed, then distance/time for short trip to find average speed.

Yea, thanks guys. I already just decided to say that I would use a speed camera (we don't have to do the practical, just design one). The teacher implied he didn't want us to use one, but I couldn't be bothered thinking of something good in a few minutes.
