use simpsons rule with 4 subintervals to approximate definite integral of blah blah.. anyway the values are
y0 = root 2
y1 = 1.08239
y2 = 1
y3 = 1.08239
y4 = root 2

i used the h/3[(yo+yn)+4(y1+y3)....
formula but i keep getting 1.77
answer is 1.2 units^2
the values are correct i know because it matched the table in the answer
how do u get 1.2?

yeh i was looked at the formula right from the book and did it couple of times and still got 1.7
its either i subbed in the values wrong sumwhere or the answer in the sheet is wrong?

There's not enough information ...
I assumed that f(x) had limits a = 0 and b = 1 and using the remaining information I calculated the answer to be 1.12 units2 (to 2 d.p.)

Post the full question, I hope the y0 to y4 are as they are where you got them from.

I dont understand either. Unfortunately the book is the winner :(

I attempted to solve the problem using definite integration:

∫ sec x dx = ln |sec x + tan x|
Then using the limits π/4 and -π/4
Then arriving to the answer of ..
= 1.192584346 ... units2
= 1.22 units2 (to 1 d.p.)

wow u managed to get it, just out of curiosity.. how did u integrate sec x? is it complicated
also.. does the long simpsons rule give different answer to the shorter one?
even though 1.7 and 1.2 is quite a difference.. lol
