Try to get one from a good brand- at least that way you may not get all the latest features like 2MP camera, but you get a nice interface which is solid.

I think Samsung D500 might be in that price range if you buy it from like one of those shops in Market City or Capitol Square whereby they don't have so many overheads for a nice store kindof thing; if not, the above recommendation for the Nokia is pretty good. Feature wise it's not that strong, but the interface is solid (especially their flawless T9 implementation for SMS'ing) and after using many phones over the years (SE, E, N, Samsung, P, M, Siemens, Sagem) I've come to appreciate a solid user interface.

To Nokia 6111's advantage over Samsung in this case is slightly more solid UI and Bluetooth; and it's also a new phone. However, Samsung's award-winning D500 is also a solid choice with it's nice interface (have to admit Samsung has improved alot over the years) and it's got slightly more appeal because it has "pretty ringtones" (in comparison to Nokia). Mind you I haven't heard all the ringtones on a 6111, but Nokia's ringtones tend to sound bland in comparison to Samsung.

Maybe try the Samsung D600, don't know what the price is but maybe you could try those cheap places in the city?

yeh, i think i might try and buy the d500 off ebay too... but my mate said he might be able to get me a d600 for the same price as a d500. See how it goes...

D600 you can probably get in the $600-$700 range for an overseas model perhaps with Australian adaptor? What this means is you might not get the memory card (mine didn't come with one)... however, if you find an Australian model for that price, which may be possible, it's a good deal.

D500 is around $400-$500 I think. The D500 was the Samsung flagship phone before, only to be replaced by D600 which is nearly identical except with upgraded camera, upgraded screen and memory card.

*agrees with fatmuscle* For a while all I heard was bad things but then they seem to have improved considerably in UI rather than just relying on the looks and colourful specs (ie. screen and ringtones) to sell the phone.

Agree, but having played with the new D500 and D600 compared to the older E700, things have improved quite a bit. Once you get used to the interface you don't notice it as much. One advantage of samsung is that their phones are really fast, press a key and you get instant response. This isn't so on my Sony Ericssons T610/T630/K700/K750/Z1010... I've used all these SE for a long period of time and have to say that I do get annoyed at the delay in response but I get used to it.

I agree there a few problems/quirks in the UI but I agree, the SE inerface pisses me off because of it's speed. I'm using the w800i and just ringing people or hooking up my BT headset is slower than it should be.

late reply here but oh well..

the new Nokia 6280 looks pretty good. I was looking at the N70 and it was too big, so the girl in the 3 shop showed me this one. it's just being released now, and she made some comment about it being exclusive to 3, but i'm sure you could get one off ebay which is unlocked. Not sure about the starting price range though.

I think I know which one you're talking about- it's the new slider.. but it feels really awkward to slide and is kinda chunky (compared to the 6111). The N70 feels the same as the 6680 (I think that's the model) which feels like a 7610 but slightly thicker, heavier and more slippery to hold. But the screen on the N70 is beautiful to look at.
