Hey - general question here, why are there gen y people smoking? I can understand the previous generations who didn't know that smoking was killing them but we have shitloads of cigarette related education etc nowadays and young people still choose to smoke? What?

Perhaps it's just natural selection in play.
this is so true.

stupid fucking kid smokers.

:(

I'm a considerate smoker. If I smoke while walking, I always do it to the side and as far away from people as possible (i.e. my walk to work and thus first cig of the day is designed so I run into no more than two people). If I'm smoking with a group of friends/people, I always make sure they're okay with it and if not, I move and if that's not possible/okay I don't do it. Even if they are okay with it, I make a concerted effort to sit/stand in such a way that the wind blows the smoke away from them. I always butt out in a bin or trash thing.

Is there anything else I'm meant to do to make my smoking okay? Apart from quitting?

Some asswhole lit up a cigarett in a lecture. Then some guy in the back row threw their 700 paged java text book at his head. Made my day.

No, I mostly smoke at home and when driving so I use ash trays and if I am smoking outside I'll find a bin with an ash tray (most places have those).

Also most places I go to when I go out, like coffee with mates (who all smoke too), have smoking areas.
i doubt you put each ciggie butt in the bin.

Okay, that's fine then.

I'm a marine scientist; I have big issues with people who stub on the ground and leave it there to be washed into the ocean.

Probably not when I'm drunk but there are a lot of places to butt out and if you're just going to sit and have a quick smoke, it's not hard to do it near a bin.

There are a lot of selfish, lazy smokers but we aren't all like that.
so you claim.

To be perfectly honest, and in a decidedly hypocritical fashion, I find smoking itself to be eminantly selfish considering the strains it puts on the health system.

But given that I drink, like I said, that's hypocritical. :p

Smokers didn't choose to have a socialized health care system.

They pay more for private health insurance, and they pay a huge amount of tax on the cigarettes.

*shrug* If it wasn't socialised, I wouldn't really have a leg to stand on, now would I? :p
