Say the cut off for a band 6 in a particular subject was 80/100.

But say your cohort literally aced the sht out of it and your internal ranking is like 1-3rd place but you got 78/100. Then you can't get a band 6 ???

if your internal mark (determined by your cohort unless your 1st) is greater than 82 then yes u will get a bank 6, since (78+82)/2 = 80 (remember 50% is ur external + 50% internal mark)

but ofcourse if they aced it , and say ur ranked 2nd and the 2nd highest mark was around 98, then ud get 50% of 98 which is 49, and 50% of ur exam mark 78 which is 39, 49+39=88, so ur overall mark is 88/100

if ur ranked 1st internally, whatever happens ur internal assesment mark is the top mark in the exam, but ur external mark is what u get in the exam

say the top mark is 98, u get that 98 as ur internal mark, say u get 65 as ur raw mark in the exam u did out of 100, and it aligns to a mark of 78, u keep that as ur external mark

so then ur internal mark is 98 and external is 78, so then ur overall mark will be 98+78=176/2 = 88

cos ur 1st ull always get the top mark watever happens thats why its a good advantage , so if the top marks 98 ull get that as ur assesment mark, if u get like 45 and thats the 20th highest mark in the exam, whoever was ranked 20th internally gets 45 as his/her internal mark

say u do get 45, thats gonna stay as ur external mark, and u get the top mark of 98

thats 45+98 = 143/2 = 71.5, so u still get a band 4 if u fail thats alright man lol

but remember if u get a raw mark of 35 it might even align to a 65

a raw mark of 63 aligned to 82 in 2010

so then ur external mark would be 65 and ur internal would be 98

98+65=163/2 = 81.5, which is a band 5, so ur in a good position man you should do good just try ur best

Please please stop saying that the 5th highest exam mark becomes the internal mark for the 5th ranked student - it doesn't work like that.

The top exam mark becomes the top internal mark (assuming no ties). The bottom exam mark becomes the bottom internal mark (assuming again no ties).

All other internal marks are determined by a series of other factors - the total marks earned by the cohort, the mean of these marks, the median of these marks and most importantly the relative gaps between the students sent in by the school. If the 5th ranked student was sent in 10 marks behind first they will get an internal mark that reflects that 10 mark difference even if the exam mark for the 5th ranked student was 20 marks behind first. That is why the gaps between the ranks are so important.
