Hey..

I was interested in doing social science, and UNSw has always been my dream uni..

So is there anyone out there who could tell me anything about it?
I think i would really enjoy it if i were to do it in uni, but i guess im asking, is it as good as people claim it is?

Thanks in advanced :)

Hi,

I am a first year student studying Social Sciences. A lot of the course structure is theory and research. So if you're interested in conducting and analyzing demographics and statistics, this is the course for you. Don't forget to choose your major. I am majoring in Development Studies.

It's just a specialised arts degree with the possibility to do criminology as a major if that's your thing.

Otherwise, its no different from arts.

To be honest, our arts faculty is pretty shit. Especially at a science/math based university like UNSW where the arts faculty have gotten their funding cut a fair bit in the last year.

USYD probably has a better arts degree available.

People shouldn't be so hard on arts, not everyone is going to get the marks/ has the desire to get into more academically rigorous courses.

I was thinking about doing a major in criminology. I've always wanted to be a lawyer, but I know now, that I definately won't be able to get in. So i guess i am sort of using this instead of an arts course.

What sort of jobs would i be able to apply for if i had a bachelor of social science majoring in crminology?

im also interested in the job prospects, and would doing criminology be a stepping stone into graduate law? more so that if i was apply for graduate law with a commerce degree? do they take the fact you did criminology into consideration?

criminology really only gets you into government or academic positions. most of the time you would be in policy change affects role.

like every other professional that has something to do with the arts, you can be a glorified specialist in media.

If you mean the core subjects, then it depends how patient and diligent you are in achieving those marks.

I can tell you that in my first year core subject of Research and Info Management, a lot of readings and analysis into qualitative and quantitative research methods are involved. Honestly, out of all my other subjects of Development Studies, Int. Relations and Political Philosophy, I find research and info mgmt very tedious and dry, but I'm sure it will be much more interesting in my next semester.

So basically the content of the subject really influenced me of how far I would want to commit to one subject.. It's much of laziness thing for me this semester :(

ya i meant first semester XD

I think it was you too, who did Social Science but dropped it to do Economics or something like that?

I think it's definitely hard to get HD... I mean I have this person in my tutorial who is like half political economist and half Einstein - the guy dominates like 70% of our class discussion. yet he didnt even get a HD in our last essay... I swear to God though his pretty up himself when u chat to him... sigh

That was me...

As for the arsehole in your class, he wouldn't do law as well would he? Or is he one of those retard arts students who espouse pseudo-intelligent views on everything despite the fact that he is essentially useless when it comes to getting a job?

An absolutely inspiring post.
I often question why people even bother going to university to study worthless subjects.
