How do you all think you went?
What questions did you choose out of A or B for each elective?
What did you write in general for each response?
How many pages?

POP CULTURE


I chose b and wrote about the distinguishing characteristics as being:
1. local to national to global
2. associated with commercial products
3. ever changing and evolving
4. easily accessible (widespread access)

1. accounted for globalisation leading pop cultures straight from local to global and assisting in quick spread of PC.

2. Commercial products more available- internet etc. global market, more consumers. TNCS using animation related characters on packaging eg. McDonald's Happy Meals.

3. Changing and evolving through increased technology from other countries, outsourcing, better quality, hybrid animations, new values, 3D comp technology rather than cel-based animation etc.

4. Easily accessible- traditionally cinemas, flip books and comic strips in earlier days.
now- internet, mobile phones, videos, dvds etc.

about 4 pages, seemed pretty crap lol



EQUALITY AND DIFFERENCE

B)
Perceptions of Indigenous groups as "alcoholics, abusive, criminals, inferior" etc.
led to cooperation through- assistance from government- more health care etc.
and banning of alcohol and pornography to reduce sexual violence which was met with resistance and conflict.

Spoke about the paternalistic treatment of Aborigines since European settlement and their perceived difference- inferior and incapable of self care.

Opportunities/ cooperation- Coles WorkReady program and ABSTUDY to reduce inequality- recognises that indigenous struggle to attain work and to learn due to minimal access to these resources and lack of motivation.

about 3 and a half pages. small writing.

oh man i chose b) for pop culture too. and by looking at what you did, i sucked. ahahahaha.

overall i dont think it was too bad. but then again, i say that and end up with crap marks lol.

i also chose b) for belief systems. both those quesitons were soooooo hard!

oh haha i do the opposite ones :)
which were;
belief systems - buddhism
&
work and leisure.

i chose both b for the essays and found it not easy but not so hard either.
like.. in reading time i was freeking out and so devistated.
although i think that was because i was panicking.
and then did everything and was very very very happy with it in the end :)
for each essay [and continuity and change in a country] i wrote 6-7 pages :D

i was scared especially with the theory of social change because i had only studied it in relation to my chosen counrty, although my response ended up really well written :)

i came 3rd in soc and if i did well in this exam who knows.. band 6 ? 5? :):):)

over-all, a really good exam.

hope everyone thinks that did as well too :):)

I thought it was surprisingly straight forward, nothing too out of the blue

i do belief systems and equality and diff
belief systems
a) was abt power and hierarchy in change and resisting change in one belief system ...so i did the caste system (varna) in hinduism and how it hasn't changed for a few millenia

Equal & Diff
a) was abt ways of reducing discrimination ...South Africa and ways of eliminating disrimination and prejudices after Apartheid
education throughout socialisation, engrained human right is constitution and affirmative action (it was basically my PIP...lol)

i wrote at least 6 pages for all of the writing tasks (Q4, Q6, Q7)

For pop, i chose b. Surprisingly easy, yet there was too much to talk about and not enough time. 9 pages
For Belief Systems, i chose a. Islam didn't fit in with this question very well... the first part of it anyway. the second part where we were asked to discuss change and resistance to change was ok. Hard question. Managed 6 pages.
Hopefully it's all good.

i thought it was a really nice exam surprisingly because i was totally unsure of what to expect. It seemed like they pretty much recycled questions from past exams because they'd run out of stuff on the syllabus... does anyone else agree? I was expecting the first two questions to be like the definition of continuity and change or something because theyve already asked for persons and society before although in a different combination. i also thought that the essay questions were quite good although i probably bluffed a bit in my beleif systems! i did beleif systems-islam a) and equality and difference-women a)

haha i wrote EXACTLY what u wrote about for pop culture. same points about technology and everything. I love that question. the characteristics are easy.

My other essay was on Beliefe systems (Buddhism) and i chose the one talking about ideology and acceptance/rejection.

Thought it was a pretty straight forward exam. But then again the marking of the essays is very subjective so i guess you have to be lucky with who you get.

I did Belief systems - Buddhism and Equality and Difference - Women. I thought the "hierarchy" part of the question was very specific I talked about Lamaism and gender inequality between the monks/nuns and how the different variants showed continuity and change. For Equality and Difference I wrote about the womens movements from 1914 and also Affirmative action and Government Policies. Overall I thought the extended were pretty fair apart from the "hierarchy" bit, managed 7-8 for each.

thank goodness lol i actually struggled to remember the characteristics for a moment aahah but i remembered highlighting them. i must be a bit slow.

i do equality and difference and belief systems / buddhism, and i found the questions okay ?
for equality and difference i did reducin discrimination, but im not really sure if i did it right, i didnt mention legislation because i figured groups and individuals (not govt) but then i realised after the exam, govt. is group so damn, i don't think i covered that well :(
belief systems was acceptance and rejection, which wasn't too bad, just kinda went on about how there was a split and there was some rejection there, which led to wider acceptance in global society esp. australia ..
it wasn't too bad overall, it was good for me cos i didn't really study at all cos i had maths .. hm hope i did enough for a band 5 :)

I did the first pop culture question on stakeholders and i was practically cheering cause i had studied exactly that
I then did equality and different with relation to the different groups and how they experience discrimination bla bla bla

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GLAD ITS OVER! ILL NEVER HAVE TO THINK ABOUT VIETNAM OR ROCK 'N' ROLL EVER AGAIN:) :) :) :)

For PC I did cyberculture and was ready to do the case-specific question, but I did question a, because it links so well with globalisation so I talked about how cyberculture facilitates the perpetuation of a range of other cultures by offering global connectedness, postmodern geographies, the subversion of constructs associated with issues of access, and stuff like that. Just realised I forgot to chuck in my coolest example but I don't know if it would have worked with that essay question, oh wells. 4 pages, with real small writing towards the end (for me anyway).

For Belief Systems, I did Islam, picked question b, talked about a local community and future possibilities for change and resistance to change because of the dissolution of hierarchy and challenging of power vs a consistent connection with and unity through rituals. Then I talked about Turkey and Iran for a bit, in particular the politicisation of the hijab and public responses to it, and then I went global for western christian hegemony and the militant fundamentalism that can emerge in traditional communities in response to the aggression of modernism, versus the idea of "ijtihad", the "reasoned struggle" to rethink and reformulate Islam within a western context (and chucked in stuff about unity through prayer and global communication systems). There was just too much to write, I couldn't go into sufficient detail in time but my teacher was delighted to hear what I'd done. 6 pages.

The hierarchy and power question was A.

I did that too. Found it difficult to write stuff. But talked about how there was no power structure in Islam, and how God was the only being that had power. Talked about how power was culturally determined -> Saudia Arabia and the Wahabbi Muslims have kept tradition, etc. My whole essay pretty much revolved around traditionalists Vs Modernists, and calls for reform to Islam. Mentioned the Mufti's abuse of authority when he made those comments... Angered the modernist Ummah... etc etc. and some how i mentioned Ayaan Hirsi Ali's book Infidel lol but linked it back to power. For hierarchy i talked about how The propher Muhammed was at the top, followed by the other prophets [i didn't mention the Caliph or sects of islam gah! :(]and then the Imam's. Also talked about gender in the hierarchy and discussed a group in Malaysia called "Sisters in Islam"...

Even though it sounds like i wrote alot, i prolly just repeated myself, cos that's how it felt!

yeah the exam was ok, i did
Pop culture a) - stakeholders in rock'n'roll
[those who oppose not having much control over it though attempting, and the control shift from the traditional controllers to the consumers with internet etc.]
and
Eq. + Difderence b) - perceptions
[mainly talked about paternalism and how it is met with conflict etc.]

i felt a bit dodgey and that i was more recounting rather than "analysing" or whatever we were supposed to do but hey :)
it's over!!

(A) i dont remember what wrote i did really bad in it

WORK AND LEISURE
(A) or (B) i dont remember but its the one with something about changes in work and leisure affects something (i think it was status or something)

started with the process of how work and leisure integrates with the 5 concepts and that cycle TIME AFFECTS ENVIRONMENT WHICH AFFECTS CULTURE -> SOCIETY THEN PERSONS

after that i went into examples and statistics like changes in the demand for work... "40 hours to 42 hours (1988 - 1999)" and said this is a result of persons placing a greater importance on money and leisure in this consummerist world... then related it to maslows hierachy of needs saying people need basic needs such as food and shelter and a sense of security but globalization has made this work culture more competitive thus people are demanding more work... blah blah

then i started to remember employment relations (which i learnt 3 times in business studies, economics and society and culture) i put in stuff like less unionised movement and related it to power and its shift toward employers

after that i continued with employment relations like stuff about AWA's, decrease in minimum award conditions as a result of authority wielding individuals such as the federal government responding to the skills shortages and to improve productivity in the economy... blah blah

CONCLUSION

DONE

i think i did well overall but the equality and difference one i sucked balls in it... and the metho question with surveys and WTF CASE STUDY!!! that sucked ... but i rekon i did ok...

^___^ I thoroughly enjoyed it. hard exam~
My sac status is probably my second best subject to extension ~ I came 1st, and have only lost a few marks throughout this whole year in it, so i'm hoping for the best.

I did Pop culture A) and Islam/Belief Systems A)

I agree with some of you who said the power/hierarchy was difficult but I think if you know how to manipulate the question you'll be a-ok ~

Oopsie-poo, heh too much looking at past papers and thinking about the trials (which were set out the opposite way for the essay choices, I think). Your content sounds pretty mad indeedy, I didn't refer to hierarchy specifically enough I think but ah well. Still feel like I put on a good show haha
I quite liked the questions though, allowed for a lot of information to be chucked in. Good god, I'm unable to string together a normal-sounding sentence, just got home from IPT so that might explain it. Stoopid computers.

oh goodness, just reading over what you guys wrote above and its making myself feel really bad! i only did a bit over a page for q4 (i didnt realise we had to write so much - we had a really bad teacher so im screwed) and for section 2 i only wrote 4 pages for each... and i came first in sac at my school so this is not looking good at all! i was feeling fairly confident till now! lol.
ah well. guess its good to have the wake up call before i get the results back! haha. thanks guys
