Hey i have an assessment for belonging, and we hav to choose 2 text types . Just wandering does anyone think this song is good to use - Welcome to my life Simple Plan? My teacher said its a really good song. Hmm can i talk about belonging ? Thanks help much appreciated..

Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place?
Like somehow you just don't belong
And no one understands you
Do you ever wanna runaway?
Do you lock yourself in your room?
With the radio on turned up so loud
That no one hears you screaming

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

Do you wanna be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more?
Before your life is over
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With their big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you're bleeding

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

No one ever lied straight to your face
No one ever stabbed you in the back
You might think I'm happy but I'm not gonna be okay
Everybody always gave you what you wanted
Never had to work it was always there
You don't know what it's like, what it's like

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like (what it's like)

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life
Welcome to my life
Welcome to my life

do it and i hope your teacher slaps you across the head
Lol I agree, this song isnt material for being analysed. Your response will be very superficial. How do you plan on writing a 1000+ word essay on this song?

You can use it but your other related text would need to be really substantial
But I'd say go for it

edit: you also need to analyse the melody and rythym not just the lyrics
yeh i gota talk about the music as well i noe, lol :)

don't do it.
I have finished HSC Advanced English and my teacher, who, to give her some authority, has marked AOS for years, warned us against using songs unless we can really give our responses depth with analysis of tonal shifts, structure, and all that musicology stuff. Many people in my grade attempted to use songs as ORTs; their responses inevitably became superficial and hollow.
You have to have a brilliant understanding of musicology and structure to do well using a song. Lyrical analysis isn't enough. Especially with Simple Plan...

don't do it, there isnt any depth to it to relate to belonging
try and find texts that relate to psychological experiences of belonging
this concept is too superficial especially for ADVANCED english

+1. i learned this in year 10, song lyrics simply don't have enough substance (i.e. depth, techniques) to analyse on their own, unless you're a really good student in both music and english don't try it.
