Sorry to restart an old post but having gone over it, I am still unsure about the answers to question 5.

The current situation I see is that point C is wrong as Comet's are by definition not stationary.

All other answers are guesswork as there is no frame of reference to differentiate them.

Free motion only defines a constant velocity not a direction or a measurable velocity.

The purpose of this experiment was to detect the aether wind.


thats a tricky question. purpose of M&M wasnt to detect the aether but measure the relative velocity of the Earth travelling through the aether :) :)

Well if you wanna get even more technical, the purpose of MM experiment was to detect the aether wind. The method was to measure the velocity of the aether relative to Earth.

But that'll probably be like, one mark, so you won't get marked down for 'The purpose of this experiment was to detect the aether [wind]'
