Hey,
I have just got my typing provisions declined. Most of the people in my grade have had most of their first choice provisions (what the OT specialist reccomended) declined.

It seems fairly stupid for a BOS staff member to sit in a little office, and decide that a name and number on paper cant have these provisions, especially when school and an Occupational Therapist (someone who is actually accredited in the area) has said otherwise. To me this seems ludicrous!

Most of the people at my school are appealing the desision

Anybody in the same situation?

Im pretty sure its a numbers thing... they'd only be allowed to let a certain number of students have special provisions - otherwise people would be doing it when they dont really need it... what is your problem with writing? If its just that you prefer a computer or have messy handwriting, I think you need to take it upon youself to correct the problem? On the other hand if you have a medical problem with your hand - i.e. RSI or severe hand cramps etc. then YES you should be entitled to the use of a keyboard

many many reasons why a keyboard could be necessary - my bro for example, needs one because of sever fine motor imparemnets.. anyhoo, the point is that you should be able to appeal if you feel the decision is unjust.

unless u actually have a proper disability IM GLAD UR SPECIAL PROVISONS WAS DECLINED. So many people are fricken cheats, and go and get special provisions just because they have mess or slow handwriting, or simply know that they can type faster than they can write. I know i could easily do 2000+ words for each section in english if i typed instead of wrote (which i can get about 1400 out in)
Get a life and dont cheat others.

omg these goddam occupational therapists would approve anyone who asked.. im glad the BOS actually screens these things. I bet i could go to you OT and get him to approve me for special provisions, but im not like u, and i dont want to cheat.

Why don't you try and justify to us why you should recieve special provisions - and we'll give you our opinions on whether you deserve it or not. Maybe your OT wrote you had "poor handwriting". I'd reject you for that.

That is COMPLETELY uncalled for!! you have no idea of the situations some people are in, and no right to call Michael a "cheat" with no knowlege of the circumstances. He could have any number of issues for which a key board is necessary! - fine motor problems is hte most common but the problems could be as extensive as mild cerebal palsy! you have NO idea!

I was granted special provisions to use a computer in the 2004 HSC (my handwriting is worse than illegible), but I had to get a detailed clinical psychologists report to justify it - it showed that the disparity between my verbal skills and my spatial skills (including motor planning, which influences handwriting) would impact negatively on my performance, and that to achieve my best results, special provisions were essential. I also had to get statements from my teachers. I understand how stressful it can be when you know that no-one can read your handwriting (teachers probably tell you off about it, too), and especially when you also know that no matter how hard you try, you can't improve it. I don't know much about the appeals process for BOS, but I hope everything works out OK. Best of luck.

My handwriting is terrible, and because of my non-english speaking background, I'm better at the spoken word rather than written. You don't see me having a fken cry about it. Man up.

Well, it's very simple, really. When no-one can read what you write, then they can't mark your work. When they can't mark your work, you can't show what you've learnt. You also can't get marks or a decent UAI, and that means no University. And if you're not having a cry about it, why bring it up at all? Brain up.

Oh, you can improve your writing perhaps? It's no ones fault but your own that you have poor handwriting. "Wow I never study for exams, which is my fault but can I get 100%?" . If you had some kind of motor-neural disease I wouldn't care but you just never learnt to write properly and can't be bothered to improve it.

And I'm not crying to the BOS, which was what I intended to mean. Just let things fly over your head, it's cool. One day you won't be able to cheat the system :rofl: Good luck getting typing provisions in uni, by the way. Last post.

Can't you read, or are you naturally this moronic? If you'd read my post, you'd see that I can't improve my handwriting. My motor planning skills are in the 13th percentile, you dickhead. As for improving my handwriting, heaven knows, I've tried - six years of occupational therapy. I don't expect you to understand. As for special provisions in Uni, I already have them. Perhaps one day you'll learn to be less afraid of things you don't understand.

I was granted special provisions in when I was doing my HSC throughout 2003/04 because I have spastic Cerebral Palsy which means I dont write as fast as I should due to impairments in both hands and legs (the left side is more affected than my right) I was granded a reader/writer, toilet breaks,etc.
Usually in granting a student special provisions the bored of studies needs several pieces of documentation from doctors, theropists, your teachers, etc and often the applying student must sit a timed writing test in the form of an essay; where the student must write an essay on one topic picked by a student.
The student then has about an hour to write as much as possible, after that hour the student then tells the person supervising how they feel after that hour. E.g feeling tired or sore.
If a student is applying for a reader they then undertake a reading test in which the test administrater documents how the student is progressing through the reading exercise. All this documentation is then sent off to the Board of studies and through the documentation provided it is then determined whether the applying student has met the criteria in order to be granted the requestered special provisions.

yea i looked at that as well, and thought that this might be a school thats found out how to work the system, and get better results (lol, probably some private school). Looks like the BOS guys have woken up to your goddam scam... GOOD ON THEM, if they rejected you, it probably means that your just crap, not disabled, and instead of trying to cheat the rest of the state by getting special provisions, you should spend more time studying and improving your handwriting (if thats the problem).

Its about time the special provisions wern't given away just for applying for them!

Oh, for crying out loud, anyone can form an opinion at anytime when presented 'facts'. The original poster didn't clarify that he even needed the special provisions, just that alot of people, himself included, applied for them. I only know one person who has applied for special provisions, and he pretty much broke his neck so it was obvious he needed it, and it has never been mentioned to people I know whose writing is barely legible to most, so I thought it was fairly uncommon that they are sought out and awarded.
Therefore when this guy implied that a large number of people from his grade -- indeed "Most of the people in (his) grade" -- applied for typing provisions, it does look suspicious, like timobr0, michaeln36 and the rest of us, pretty much, have said.

And if something's posted on the net, especially in a forum, of course people are going to comment -.-
