if it were me, i'd stay away from SSD's as they have such a high rate of failure compared to HDDs.

It dies suddenly too not like a HDD where usually you know if something's wrong with rattles, whines and weird noises.

But SSD reliability have improved over the last few years dramatically.

here's a quote from a post over at OCAU below, correct to 8.5.12

Well, as mentioned in other threads, the Sandisk SSD's have hit the market and the pricing looks very, very keen. Claimed sequential read/write speeds are right up there with the OCZ Vertex4 or Crucial M4's.

(Pricing taken from PCCG website 8/5/12, rounded $/GB to nearest whole cent)

SanDisk Extreme 120GB: $129.00 ($1.08/GB, $50 cheaper than a Crucial M4 and lose 8GB space)
SanDisk Extreme 240GB: $249.00 ($1.04/GB, $100 cheaper than a Crucial M4, lose 16GB space)
SanDisk Extreme 480GB: $489.00 ($1.02/GB, $230 cheaper than a Crucial M4, lose 32GB space)

Considering the nearest competitive prices on a 480GB/512GB SSDs:

SanDisk Extreme 480GB: $489.00 ($1.02/GB)
Crucial M4 512GB: $719 ($1.40/GB)
OCZ Agility 3 480GB: $685.00 ($1.43/GB)
OCZ Vertex 4 480GB: $785.00 ($1.64/GB)
Intel 520 Series 480GB: $849.00 ($1.77/GB)

Resonable, but the specs of the 480GB version are hopeless if you take a look at them. The 240GB seems the best out of them.

I'll probably end up buying one sooner or later, I feel there's a need for me now, which wasn't there when I built the system.

240gb for what lol?

you don't put everything on your SSD, just windows and a fewish games

unless you feel you REALLY need 240gb, don't waste your money

Even that would still be far too small for a lot of people's Steam folders I suspect.

Hmm.

(though I guess *most* games arent that disk write/read intensive)

Yeah you only put OS and a few apps you use.

i wouldn't really put in games there as it wouldn't make that much of a difference... for most games anyway.

Nah not going to put any games on it. OS, some apps such as photoshop etc... and will be storing photos, video files on it while editing then moving to the HDD. Otherwise it's way too slow, the comp just can't keep up with a mechanical HDD.
