Band 6 in Standard is better than a Band 5 in Advanced.
Band 5 in Standard is better Band 4 in Advanced.
88 in Standard is better than 80 in Advanced.


This is because they are scaled the same way. HOWEVER it is harder to get a band 6 in standard than a band 6 in advanced.

For people deciding which to pick, pick which subject you are capable of doing.

put it this way. if all the advanced students, changed to standard, and then all the standard students changed to advanced, standard would get more band 6's than advanced.

Advanced students get more band 6's, because advanced students, in general, outperform the standard students in paper 1 of the HSC exam.

Because, Paper 1 is marked on a common scale, (The marker's don't know if the student's paper they are marking is from an advanced student or a standard student.), the Board uses the marks from Paper 1, to adjust the Paper 2 marks.

Hence, as Adv students, in general, do better in paper 1 than advanced students, the board must adjust the Paper 2 marks of std and adv students so that the adv students paper 2 marks are better than the std students paper 2 marks.

Hence, adv students get an overall better mark as their paper 2 mark is much better than the advanced students paper 2 mark, also mostly the adv students paper 1 mark is also better than the std students paper 1 mark.

Honestly, I think advanced english is incredibly over-rated, especially at selective schools where people only pick it for pride reasons.
Do standard if you don't need advanced english for a uni course.
Do standard and kick everyone's ass as aposed to advanced and mediocre results.

The thing is though, because the Standard English cohort is of lower calibre then the Advanced cohort (as you would expect), it is difficult to achieve a band 5/6 in Standard, because your cohort will invariably drag you down. Here are the stats:

Having said that, it is certainly not impossible to do well in Standard.

That is only in terms of your internal assessment mark, as in English the performance of the whole Standard English candidature will determine how easily they can get good marks in paper 2. Even if you come 1st in the state (and this is very difficult, only 1 person can come first. so don't rely on it) your cohort will still pull your marks in paper 2 down. (here is the technical reasoning. i think its because for the moderation of school assessments they put the marks on the same scale by aligning the mean and top mark, whereas in the aligning of std vs adv marks they put them both on the same scale by comparing paper 1, but they look at SD and mean. Don't quote me on this, as I am only going of what I can remember from 7 months ago)

For some reason a mark of 70 in standard attained a higher UAI than a mark of 70 in advanced on SAM. Could someone give a reason for this

70 in English (Standard) is roughly equal to 70 in English (Advanced) according to the 2007 Scaling Report.

Um... I don't really know how to answer this because this is quite complicated and this issue of English (Standard) VS English (Advanced) is extremely controversial. No one has a right answer.

However, I can tell you this: 70 in English (Standard) is about top 75% of the cohort whereas 70 in English (Advanced) is about top 20% (according to the 2007 Scaling Report). In English (Standard) it seems to me that it is harder to get a good mark in this subject in comparison to English (Advanced). And the reason why the scaling of 70 in English (Standard) is roughly equal to English (Advanced) is that 70 in English (Standard) is more difficult to get than 70 in English (Advanced). Hence, the quality of the student who got 70 (English Standard) > the quality of the student who got 70 in English (Advanced)

Okay just say that you were very capable in doing advanced (and got like 9/10 etc for everything) wouldnt it be better to drop down to standard and beat everyone else hence get a fantastic UAI score?

you could probably do very well in school assessments, but they mean nothing if you can't get a high mark in the HSC, because your hsc performance determines your school assessment mark that goes on your hsc certificate.

in standard it is much harder to get a high mark. look at the stats in this thread.. very little people get high marks in standard.

Oh BTW My school is ranked 436 or something like that.

It is not. It is just that you get marked hard in a way that you have to perform well in both papers to get decent marks in English (Standard) whereas you can still get good marks in English (Advanced) with one good mark in one paper instead of two.

wrong. coming first in the internal assessment and exam will mean that you are unaffected by your cohort.
