I'm guessing they had to break in by brute force so they figured they'd just take it anyway, otherwise there's no way they'd be dumb enough to access the papers without leaving a trace and not take photos.

I'll bet you a teacher thought it was too hard and stole it. Private schools do shifty shit all the time to make sure they get better grades.
